OSCARS POLL - VOTE: Who'll win best actor?
Now that prospects brighten for "Michael Clayton" to be nominated for best picture, that should boster George Clooney's hope of winning best actor. And now that "Sweeney Todd" has surpassed "Clayton" at the box office, that may bolster Johnny Depp's chances against Clooney? Do either of them even have a prayer to beat Daniel Day-Lewis ("There Will Be Blood")?

Consider This...
Clooney (2 years ago) and Lewis (17) already won...
Johnny has never.
Lewis is a Foreign Actor...
There will probably be already 2 Foreign actors winning this year (Bardem and probabbly Cristie or Cotillard or Page)...
There has never been a year with 3 Foreigners winning 3 acting awards (not in the last 15 years at least)...
There has never been a year with the 2 top acting awards given to foreigners (at least in the last 15)...
Johnny is American and he has never won... He will WIN!

Maybe the question should be "Who will win?" and "Who should win?". DDLewis was excellent in TWBBlood--but where's the stretch for him? Doesn't he always play these kinds of roles----and wonderfully I might add. Whereas Depp pulled off a stunning performanc not so much with words, but with his face and eyes. In addition, what a stretch for him by taking on not only a singing role, but one of the most challenging singing roles. So, DDLewis will probably win as he gave the standard Oscar type performance- rage, etc. Depp should win for doing more by doing less, which is much more difficult.Which performance was the most difficult--hands down Johnny Depp's. Sorry, but I don't even see Clooney in with this group--likable actor, but again, always plays versions of himself.

If the Academy is awarding the best performance...then it's Daniel's win for sure...if it's awarding industry likability (i.e. popularity)...then Mr. Depp or Clooney will win here...A big upset can come from Denzel (if nominated) or Viggio (if nominated...If Ryan Gosling is nominated, it wouldn't be too much of an upset....Mr. Lewis and Mr. Depp are great character actors...so a split may occur and Mr. Clooney might slip thru for the win...

With all due respect, kic, Rob made some valid points and he did it without bashing Depp. Whether a performance is great or whether it is the best in a year is very subjective. Rob was not bashing Depp at all, merely stating that in his opinion it wasn't the best of the year. You think it was the best of the year. Your opinion and a perfectly valid one. But just because someone disagrees it doesn't mean they're a Depp-hater or that the bashing him.
I agree that there is a lot of Depp-bashing (and actor-bashing in general this year - Lewis has his share of bashers too) and I'm tired of it, too. But I'm also tired of people being so overly defensive about Depp, especially when there's no reason for it. His performance was one among many, many excellent performance this year. The fact that everyone only considers these 3 men as the possible winners is annoying. Frankly I hope someone else wins just to put the Clooney v Day-Lewis v Depp argument to an end.

I get awfully tired of the Depp bashing. I'm sorry, but one does not have to be spewing forth all kinds of action to be giving an award performance. Sweeney is by far one of the most stunning performances I've seen with extremely difficult material. I think Lewis will win, but there is probably not an actor in Hollywood that isn't a little envious that Depp pulled off the performance he did.

Depp will more than likely win an Oscar... but not this year. He is undeniably a terrific actor, but the trouble is he's yet to give a truly field-beating performance that stands clearly as the year's best - especially this year, when the standard is so high. (Last year, he'd have stood a better chance with Sweeney.)
Barring a huge momentum swing, Day-Lewis will win, because the performance has already become a kind of pop-culture phenomenon with the "milkshake" line - that, and the fact that he's just great in it. Much as everyone adores George Clooney, I think the Academy would baulk at giving him a second Oscar before Day-Lewis - and his film doesn't have as much sway as "Blood". It's difficult to see the momentum shifting with only two big precursors left - if the SAG and BAFTA awards both go to Day-Lewis, with the probably will (with Depp out of the running in both races), that doesn't give any of the other contenders much of a platform.

I think Day Lewis will win, but I also think after see the move that he makes quite a similar work as he did in "Gangs of New York", maybe Academy will give him now, what it was supposed to won back them and finally Brody took. Take care.

depp was mediocre at best in 'sweeny'. he was an average singer who basically looked moody the whole film. clooney didn't really have much to do in 'michael clayton', although it was a decent performance. on the other hand, day-lewis has pretty much given one of the greatest film performances ever created, and so, regardless of the fact that he already has an Oscar, he will definetly get it again this year. i mean, someone tell me, can you even recognize day-lewis in 'there will be blood'? he completely disappears into daniel plainview. excellence should always win.

One rule stands out here: Day Lewis and Clooney have already won an Oscar. Depp hasn't. We all love Depp. He's amazing in Sweeney.
JUST GIVE IT TO HIM ALREADY!!
