Time still out of sync with Oscars; EW gets it right

January 28, 2008 | 11:58 am

Last year Time magazine was touting "Babel" as the expected winner of the best picture prize, though editors thought "The Departed" was more deserving of the honor. This year they are equally mixed up, choosing "There Will Be Blood" as the likely winner while relegating "No Country for Old Men" to runner-up status. As for the acting awards, they have the men right — Daniel Day-Lewis and Javier Bardem — while they are behind the times (so to speak) with their choices of Marion Cotillard and Cate Blanchett as the likely women to win.

While Time may not have the most astute of prognosticators, I do agree with their recognition of who and what was robbed, starting with "Sweeney Todd" as a best picture nominee! To read the rest of their thoughts, CLICK HERE.

The pundits at Time's sister magazine, Entertainment Weekly, have set up their own version of the Buzzmeter. While two of their top Oscarologists - Dave Karger and Jill Bernstein - take part in our prediction panel, the forecasts of the other four, including Mark Harris, can only be found on the EW website - CLICK HERE. As of today, they think that seven of the top eight races are a done deal, with only supporting actress still up for grabs.
