Will Oscar think CAS nominees sound familiar?

January 10, 2008 |  2:00 pm

Perennial Oscar nominee Kevin O'Connell can only hope that nod number 20 is the lucky one. If today's announcement of contenders for kudos from the Cinema Audio Society carries through to the upcoming Oscar noms, he should be back in the competition again this year as part of the sound mixing team for "Transformers." But, just as he has never won an Oscar, so too has O'Connell failed to win favor with his colleagues at the CAS going 0 for 11 so far. Whether he makes it an even dozen losses will be known when the awards are handed out February 16.

This year, his competition at the CAS includes the teams who sound mixed "The Bourne Ultimatum," "Into the Wild," "No Country for Old Men," and "300." Over the past 14 years, the CAS nominees have gone on to take 51 of the 70 Oscar slots for sound mixing though the winners have matched up only half the time. While the sound mixing team for "Dreamgirls" won both awards last year, for the previous 5 years in a row, the CAS choice lost at the Oscars.
