Academy: We no speak Spanish

February 24, 2008 |  6:54 pm

No wonder the academy can't get the foreign-language film category right. At its website, the academy just posted a transcript of Javier Bardem's acceptance speech, omitting the Spanish-language part! Here it is:

"Wow. Alright, this is very amazing. It's a great honor for me to have this. want to & I have to speak fast here, man. Thank you to the Coens for being crazy enough to think that I could do that and put one of the most horrible haircuts in history over my head.

"Thank you for really proving my work. I want to share this with the cast, with the great Tommy Lee Jones, with the great Josh Brolin, with the great Kelly Macdonald. And I want to dedicate this to my mother, and I have to say this in Spanish, and I'm sorry... [Speaking in Spanish] Thank you very much!"

His mother is the actress Pilar Bardem, he is the grandson of actors Rafael Bardem and Matilde Muñoz Sampedro, and the nephew of screenwriter and director Juan Antonio Bardem. Both his older brother and his older sister, Carlos and Mónica Bardem are actors.

I didn't listen to the whole speech.
"For you mom, for your parents [names them] for your grandparents [names them] and to all the great Spanish comedians that ..."
I stopped listening after that. By comedians I think he's reffering to actors. I think he comes from a long line of actors.
