Celine vs. Celine (and Avril and Feist) at the Junos

February 5, 2008 |  7:24 pm

The Junos — Canada's version of the Grammys — announced nominations Tuesday for the 37th annual awardsfest, and chanteuse Celine Dion leads Celine3with six nods, including dueling bids for album of the year with her comeback English-language disc "Taking Chances" up against her French disque "D'elles."

Also competing in that category are the works of the three artists who got five nods apiece — pop star Avril Lavigne ("The Best Darn Thing"), crooner Michael Buble ("Call Me Irresponsible") and indie favorite Feist ("The Reminder"). Buble won the prize two years ago ("It's Time"), when he also won best single ("Home").

Of these four Juno hopefuls, only Feist is competing at this Sunday's Grammys, with her catchy single "1234" having propelled her to four nominations there, including new artist of the year. Each of these Canadian success stories has taken home multiple Junos in the past, though for Dion her last win was almost a decade ago for 1999's "Let's Talk About Love." Hosting the festivities from Calgary on April 6 will be comedian Russell Peters.

Frankie, I agree with you when you say that Celine is talented but that her music "is basically mediocre, bland and overblown productions", I won't argue with you on that. Nevertheless, it seems like there are countless people who like that. My point is that it's not a reason to judge Canadians because in the end, Celine, and the movie "Juno" for that matter, have fans all over the world. The 200 million CDs(!) sold by Celine weren't purchased only by Canadians. Regardless of one's musical preferences, I just thought it was a rather facile shot at Canadians.

Daniel D.--that's nice you love Celine...good for you....She has a wonderful voice and infact I like very few of her songs...but her music is basically mediocre, bland and overblown productions...like Barry Manilow, Mariah Carey, BoyzIIMen, Josh Grobin, etc. Cheesey stuff but tolerable for sh*ts & giggles....they're all guilty pleasures...like Disco and cheesey 60s & 70s, 80s one-hit wonders...which I love as well...

Frankie, you're entitled to your opinion but let me remind you that Celine just completed a 5 year stint in a Coliseum that was built for her in Las Vegas. She gave 720 shows and over 3 million people attended her show! I continually travel around the world for my work and Celine's songs are played literally everywhere. If Canadians have bad taste, based on the fact that they like Celine Dion, well they aren't the only ones... so do Europeans, Japanese, Chinese, Mexicans, Brazilians, Australians ...and Americans.

Like the movie of the same name...Meaningless!...Canadians seem to have mediocre taste in music I see or is it just bad taste?...

CELINE YOU'RE THE BEST!!! YOU WILL WIN THEM ALL! :-)
