Gold Derby Awards: 'No Country' sweeps but . . .
For many years our forum posters haven't been content with just discussing and predicting awards bestowed by other groups. Yesterday the winners of the 2007 Gold Derby Film Awards were unveiled: "No Country for Old Men"
triumphed with six awards out of nine nominations, including the top prizes for best picture, best director, best adapted screenplay and supporting actor (Javier Bardem).
Curiously, "No Country" won best picture by just a few votes. The next four films ("Atonement," "Juno," "Sweeney Todd" and "There Will Be Blood") all tied for second place.
Even though "Atonement" was the nominations leader with 11, the film only won awards for costume design and original score. Other acting winners were Daniel Day-Lewis for lead actor (in a landslide), Marion Cotillard (surprisingly, in a landslide) for lead actress, and Amy Ryan in the very competitive supporting actress race.
The Gold Derby forum posters also voted to honor four individuals for life achievement this year: Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson, Martin Scorsese and Maggie Smith.
