No dice for 'No Country'; 'Bourne' wins ACE Eddie Award
"The Bourne Identity" won the American Cinema Editors' Eddie Award last night, an ominous victory over "No Country for Old Men. " Many Oscarologists
believe that the film that wins best picture at the Oscars usually wins the editing prize too, and takes the equivalent laurel earlier from the guild.
"Bourne" isn't nominated for best picture, of course, but the loss of "No Country" may tattle that there's less support for the latter than is widely believed. However, "No Country" pulled off a rare sweep of the top honors from the producers, directors, writers and screen actors (ensemble award) guilds, a feat only previously accomplished by Oscar best-picture winner "American Beauty. " And it doesn't really need the editing Oscar to win the top prize. Only half of the past 10 best-picture champs had that accompanying trophy.
But the ACE Eddie Award really is a good omen foretelling the equivalent Oscar champ. Over the past decade, eight films won both.
