Lindsay and Eddie pelted with newer, juicier Razzies

While the movies got razzed, the crowd really got jazzed at the Magicopolis Theater in Santa Monica this morning — a few hours before the Indie Spirits started down the beach a mile or two. I haven't attended the ceremony in a few years. Haven't seen it since they blasted "Battlefield Earth" like a nuclear asteroid with a record number of "wins," but today when I returned to see several new records set, it hit me how much these delicious raspberries have ripened.

Razzies

Granted, it's still deliberately cheesy and low-rent. If it wasn't anti-slick, the show wouldn't match the spirit of its mission, but all the little things are now brightly polished — the corny banter, puns and sly digs at the expense of pompous Hollywood — and the big things too. The video presentations are more sophisticated and the campy stage act that opens the show would make Charles Busch and Joan Crawford proud.

Today, a gal and drag guy did Britney Spears one better (or at least one color better) by donning pink and black wigs, mucho makeup and too-tight suburban frocks to croon a parody of "Good Morning, Baltimore" from "Hairspray." The performance of "Good Morning, Razzie Day" was truly winning and the lyrics clever, promising a celebration of the "worst of last year" that will leave Hollywood "trembling with fear."

Video-wise, they were shrewd to let Richard Roeper's review of "I Know Who Killed Me" sum up one of the two films that swept today's kudos (the other was "Norbit," of course): "If your career has to hit rock bottom before you can begin rehab, then this should do the trick for Lindsay Lohan."

Lohan "won" three awards today. Nominated against herself for her dual roles in "I Know Who Killed Me," she received the same number of votes for both, thus tying herself to win two Razzies as worst actress. She was also razzed as worst screen couple.

Reaping eight of its nine nominations, "I Know Who Killed Me" emerged as the biggest "winner" in Razzie history, surpassing the seven past wins for "Battlefield Earth" and "Showgirls."

Eddie Murphy became the first performer ever to win three of the four worst-acting trophies in a single year, all for his multiple roles in worst-picture nominee "Norbit": as the nerdy title character (worst actor), Asian role Mr. Wong (worst supporting actor) and 400-pound shrew Rasputia (worst supporting actress). That's generous pay-back for not winning the Academy Award last year for "Dreamgirls," in large part, some pundits believe (not me), because "Norbit" came out during Oscar voting period last year. Personally, I think he would've lost anyway thanks to his smug, lackluster performances at the Golden Globe and SAG podiums earlier and the momentum Alan Arkin clearly gained near the home stretch.
