Whoopi wounded by Oscar snub
On "The View" on Monday morning, the rest of the women rallied around show moderator Whoopi Goldberg, who was visibly upset at being left out of a montage of Oscar's memorable moments on Sunday night's awards-cast. This
snub may have been unintentional, but to not include a clip of the first woman to solo as Oscar host (and four times at that -- 1993, 1995, 1998, 2001) really is inexcusable.
Add to that Goldberg's history-making awards achievements. She is one of only 10 people to win the grand slam of awards: Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, Tony. She is the only African American actress with two Oscar nods, losing lead actress for "The Color Purple" (1985) before winning supporting actress for "Ghost" (1990). As she said in her heartfelt acceptance speech: "As a little kid, I lived in the projects and you're the people I watched. You're the people that made me want to be an actor."
While the Oscarcast did include a clip of Goldberg's win -- she was only the second African American actress to win an Oscar (after Hattie McDaniel did in for 1939's "Gone With the Wind") -- there were no clips from her memorable appearances as host. Her entrance from the ceiling on a swing a la Nicole Kidman in "Moulin Rouge" or her walking out in whiteface a la Cate Blanchett in "Elizabeth" and calling herself the first "African Queen" were but two of the many highlights from which the academy could and should have chosen at least one to honor her.
Do you think Whoopi was robbed?

Truth,
Gay or straight. Slings are justified or unjustified. This is Hollywood, take it in the chin LIKE A REAL MAN! But don't expect special treatment because of your sexual preference. In Hollywood and its ruthless press and paparazzi, its EVEN STEVEN baby! Now, go back down and bowing down to Rosie. What she doing these days? Cleaning "the Donald's" toilets? By the way, I'm a lesbian! She and you, do NOT represent me! Understand stupid?

Didi using DEHUMANIZING terms to describe Rosie, typical. It says a lot about you. You then said Rosie had the "audacity" to criticize a beacon of morality like Donald Trump. What you are saying because Rosie is gay she shouldn't criticize anyone because straight people are better than everyone, straight people make the rules and control everyone that are not straight. That's what you're saying. Too bad I'm not listening to your straight supremacist message! GO ROSIE!!!!!

I meant first black male host, my mistake.
I may be wrong now, but next time I'll be right, and Whoopi, will still be terrible.

Did I watch the Oscar presentation?
No. Why? It is extremely irrelevant to the world we live in now.
Do I want to hear actors use the actors as a bully pulpit for some crusade they are on? Not until the rest of the world gets to take the mike.
The Oscars had their heyday back when girls wore poodle skirts and sipped coke through a straw and read screen mags at the drugstore. Since then...no one cares.

And people wonder why there's so much frustration and crime going on today. An organization like the academy awards used whoopi to get them ratings as a host 4 times because it was convenient. 4 times. But when it's time to honor the first woman to host as a solo presenter they remove her name from the roster of great moments. Keep sending those messages, our kids will keep getting mixed messages. Senseless crime and senseless actions like this go hand in hand.

I think that people would like to live in a world where race and gender discrimination does not exist. We do not yet live in that world so, yes, we will bring it up. I think that was at play as well as the rush job they did on a lot of those montages. It seemed like they didn't choose Oscar nominated films often or chose random moments that they thought of off the top of their heads. Next time they need to think about what they're showing.

Not only is the academy racist for snubbing Whoopy they snubbed Steve Martin too - when will they start recognizing that the elite white art collector is now a major Hollywood presence?
Posted by: Keith H | February 26, 2008 at 10:37 AM
Not to worry, you have made a lasting contribution to the world at large by being who you are.
Whoopi, your extraordinary presence cannot be dimmed.

Who cares? People are dying in Iraq, kids are being shot in L.A., and inflation is up. Whoopi getting recognition for stuff she did years ago is way, way way, down on my list of things to worry about.
Did Whoopi bring this up or this just the blog author looking for a "controversial" story?

Do not for one moment think that
this snub has in any way affected Whoopi Goldberg. She is a guardian of the greatest medium of the stage.. " comedy". I think Hollywood this year wanted a crisp camelia -like aura of people
that our great grandfathers could
enjoy. ( No offense Jon Stewart Adore You!)
However the campaigning has given us color daily.. some ignorant powerful people wanted a little less truth and more : Im ready for my close-up mister Demille"... Here's to penny candies and bath tub gin.. if only for a night. Winchell would have been proud.

To the blogger named TRUTH;
Donald Trump best described Rosie O'donnell, "she's a FAT SLOB." Whoopi has more than had her share of backlash during her career from Hollywood and from the African-American community. She's straight so YOU probably don't notice it nor ever cared.
If Rosie O'donnell has the audacity to throw the first stone, as she did with Donald Trump, then she damn better take the punches like a man!

Well, let's see-every other Oscar host was shown in action-why not Whoopi? I believe it was an honest, but stupid omission. Whether you find her humorous or not-she is a groundbreaker and it was a faux-pas to skip her.
Re Brad Renfro-I understand because there are always celebrities passed over in the "In Memoriam"-simply because showing over 50 would cause their lives to be just another "man, this is too long" moment.

First Bkack woman to host and she did it 4 times.
She has won an Oscar herself and been nominated twice.
She has won all the awards and the Accademy does not give her but a glimpse at the awards. Yes, she was snubbed.Could this happen to a white woman? Maybe. More like sexism plus raceism found in our country - Not a good thing.

Brad freakin' Renfro? Are you kidding? Are you carrying a banner for a convicted felon and acknowledged illegal drug user? I agree that it is silly for people to be concerned with whether or not Whoopi got snubbed because she was not in some meainigless montage, but your Brad Renfro rant is ridiculous, and over the top. Brad made the choice to continue to use drugs and that choice cost him his life. Plain and simple. When will people start taking ownership of their actions and stop blaming society for everything?

They made a a big mistake!
Posted by: Shirley | February 26, 2008 at 03:49 AM
I like the comment-the view is irrevelant-too funny. But I agree-Roy Schieder was included and I don't remember seeing Steve Martin. Don't agree that Page was robbed-I actually don't believe her performance was Oscar caliber.

The media has come to Whoopi's defense because she's straight. Whenever Rosie O'Donnell would make a statement about the brutal treatment she recieved from the media people like Tom O'Neil are on every show to DEHUMANIZE her and spread rumors about her. People like Tom O'Neil are never called on it because their targets are gay and people are ok with DEHUMANIZING and bashing gay people.
Posted by: Truth | February 26, 2008 at 02:16 AM
Whoopi Goldberg is NOT FUNNY.
PERIOD. BLEECH!
(And no, I don't think she was robbed.)
Posted by: JD | February 25, 2008 at 11:26 PM
Brian, perhaps you should check your theory. Brad Renfro passed away a week before Ledger but they found the time to add him. Renfro is an actor, a pretty good one when on his game, what happened that he couldn't be included.
Posted by: IClavdivs | February 25, 2008 at 10:44 PM
I don't know why Whoopi wasn't shown in the clips and really I don't care. She can be in the montage next year. But what about Brad Renfro? He died a week before Heath Ledger and has already been forgotten.

Ellen Page was the one who was robbed! ROBBED, I TELL YOU!!!!
Posted by: Mary Witherspoon | February 25, 2008 at 09:12 PM
Billy Crystal, Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, David Letterman, Chris Rock, among many other former hosts with little or no airtime last night. Yikes - when will people stop looking for something to whine about?
Posted by: DKLd | February 25, 2008 at 08:49 PM
Actually, Ellen and Billy and Steve WERE in the clips...so I guess someone DID miss it.
I think it is a valid point when she was the host four times. Ellen and Steve Martin hosted once each. Whoppi hosted4 x , was the FIRST Woman AND Black host, period. The point is completely objective. Subjective comments need not apply.
Posted by: Glen McLeod | February 25, 2008 at 08:37 PM
Given that she was on the only host to win a Oscar or have a decent movie career, she was snubbed. Was it intentional, I believe yes. Was it a conspiracy, no.
Hollywood is a petty industry where comics, women, and Americans who grew up poor typically get the shaft.

What a booooooooring show. was this the Oscars or John Stewart's political audition. John you failed, you are not funny and the numbers showed. My eight year old said dad, he is so boring why not have Jay Leno or Conan host.
To Gil Cates: let's not make another one of these mistakes Gil. With all the talent in Hollywood you can't find someone funny. Clue: Carlos Mencia or Conan O'Brien.
Shame, shame it could have been a nice 80th but once again political agendas and ego. We are not stupid Gil, stop dumbing it down.
