Vulture feasts on Tonys prospects

February 7, 2008 | 10:14 am

Dan Kois and Lane Brown of New York magazine's biting Vulture blog spent Monday night at the star-studded benefit "Broadway Backwards" looking forward to the Tonys.

Among those bold-faced names quizzed about the prospects of various tuners for kudos come June, the name of one show was on everyone's lips — "In the Heights."

Last season's Off Broadway sensation about life in the Latino community of Washington Heights opens next month on Broadway. This hip-hop musical picked up a special Drama Desk award last year and is certain to be a contender for top Tony honors this year. While that show may inspire performers like Cheyenne Jackson, star of the surprise hit "Xanadu," as he astutely reminds us, the upcoming "A Catered Affair" is "a small critics' darling-type show." And, of course, his own show could well be one of the four nominees.

A Catered Affair is a critics darling???...must have been re-tooled tremendously since it got a critics drubbing in San Diego...or it's a really bad year for Broadway musicals...
