'Canterbury's Law': Is Margulies back on the Emmy case?

March 10, 2008 |  1:31 pm

Julianna Margulies is the only regular cast member of "ER" who won an Emmy. She picked up the supporting actress trophy for the show's first season back in 1995 and was nominated for each of her following five years on the medical drama. She moved up to lead actress in the third season and while she never won any of her four bids in that category, she could well be competing there again this year for her return to series television, "Canterbury's Law," which debuts tonight on Fox.

As a tough-talking lawyer who usually wins in the courtroom but loses in love, she plays the kind of flawed character who could appeal to Emmy voters. Of last year's six lead actress nominees, Kyra Sedgwick ("The Closer") and Mariska Hargitay ("Law & Order: SVU") portrayed similarly conflicted career women. And earlier this year, likely nominee Glenn Close won a Golden Globe for her first season as a cutthroat legal eagle in "Damages."

Reviewing this new series, Matt Roush of TV Guide says, "Think 'House' in stiletto heels with a law degree, and you'll start to get the picture of Fox's relentlessly edgy 'Canterbury's Law,' a lightning-paced legal drama that roars with a feisty thunder. 'ER's' dynamic Julianna Margulies is in perpetual motion as Elizabeth Canterbury, a barracuda who's always spoiling for a fight in and out of court. This no-nonsense warrior barks orders, taunts adversaries (including the terrific Terry Kinney as the DA) and aggravates authorities while tackling sensational cases with cunning, often desperate tactics — some of which have backfire potential. She would have been right at home on the early (best) days of 'The Practice.'"

Robert Bianco of USA Today says, "The prime asset is Margulies' terrific performance as Canterbury, a successful defense attorney with a disastrous personal life. Her driven lawyer is a softer, gentler cousin of 'Damage's' Patty Hewes. Which is fine: As much fun as Glenn Close's operatic performance as the stop-at-nothing Patty may be, it's a style that works best in a limited-run series on a cable network. Like Dr. House, another comparison that immediately comes to mind, Elizabeth can be wildly abrasive and single-minded. ('I could love the person on the stand body and soul and still rip their throat out during cross,' is one of her kinder statements.) She's also witty — a side Margulies conveys with such skill and poise, you can't help but be happy to have her back on air. But she's more attached to her clients than House is to his patients, and while she's playing to win, it's for them, not for the sake of the game alone."

And Diane Werts of Newsday writes, "(W)hat 'Canterbury' has powerfully going for it, besides the magnetic/vulnerable Margulies, is a cast surrounding her with equal strength, from principled second Ben Shenkman to Terry Kinney as their sneaky prosecutorial adversary, plus an array of effective guest stars from the rich East Coast acting pool. (Set in Providence, the show is produced out of New York.) The writing and production, overseen by 'Rescue Me' producers Denis Leary and Jim Serpico, often crackles."

Less than 30 seconds into it and already evident that the writers don't know what the f(&k they're talking about. Improper argument in front of a jury that would land any trial lawyer in jail. When will these hollywood idiots try to learn about trial law before they try to reenact it?
