Watch out, Tonys fans: Rose will soon tie Josie's record

Many thanks for our forum posters "Dr. L" and "Tallulah's Cocaine" for discovering a Tony Awards record that may be tied this year.

Now Dr. L notes:

If Patti LuPone and Laura Benanti are nominated for Tonys this year, the characters of Mama Rose and Louise from the musical Gypsy will tie the record. (Note: Rex Robbins who played opposite Angela Lansbury in 1974 did not get a Tony nomination keeping the role of Herbie from making the list.)

Mama Rose has previously been played and honored with nominations for Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury (win), Tyne Daly (win) and Bernadette Peters.

Louise has been previously played and honored with nominations for Sandra Church, Zan Charisse, Christa Moore and Tammy Blanchard.

Another role that's reaped four nominations: Zero Mostel (win), Herschel Bernardi, Topol and Alfred Molina were honored for playing Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof.

The award magnet, though, appears to be playing Medea. Judith Anderson, Zoe Caldwell and Diana Rigg all won best actress in a play for the role while Fiona Shaw also received a nomination for her interpretation.

also Forum has a strong record of wins, with awards for Zero Mostel, Phil Silvers, and Nathan Lane.

Patti LuPone deserves a Tony nomination and award. I hope she gets both. Incredible talent and hard work pay off beautifully in the new "Gypsy."
