Tony Award nominations boost Broadway attendance
Broadway World does a great job at laying out the box office grosses for all 35 shows running on the rialto right now. Following the announcement of the Tony Awards nominations last Tuesday, many of this year's contenders saw an increase in ticket sales.
Among the musicals, "In the Heights," leading with a lucky 13 nods, saw a 15% boost in ticket sales and played to 85% capacity. Seven-time nominee "Passing Strange," which had been struggling to fill seats, had a 14% increase taking attendance to 59%. The other two best-musical contenders scored four nominations apiece. "Cry-Baby" enjoyed only a modest increase of 5% bringing attendance up to 70%. And the longest-running show of the bunch, "Xanadu," had the smallest increase possible -- 0.1% -- which brought attendance to 69.1%.
Only two of the four nominated plays are still running. They both saw upticks in the takings –- "August: Osage County" got a 3% boost taking attendance to 78% while "The 39 Steps" went up by 7% to 82%.
