Maura West of 'As the World Turns' will win best actress at the Daytime Emmys again, say 3 of our 4 pundits

June 19, 2008 |  1:22 pm

Three of our four Daytime Emmy gurus say last year's winner of best actress, Maura West ("As the World Turns"), will repeat. The sole naysayer picks soap grande dame Jeanne Cooper to win her first Emmy since debuting on "The Young and the Restless" in 1973.

I asked four of our shrewdest forum posters to give us their views, which are largely based upon viewing the actual sample episodes submitted to actual Emmy judges: east/west, Awards_madness, Syrus80 and our moderator Matthew "Boidiva2" Cormier. Check out the analysis of those episodes in our forums — CLICK HERE (then scroll down to "Daytime Emmy Judges' Forum").

MATTHEW 'BOIDIVA2' ANALYSIS OF BEST-ACTRESS RACE: This is the only category whose tapes I did get a chance to watch, so my rankings are based on my thoughts after viewing the tapes. With that said, i suspect many voters may have voted on name alone and this would make Jeanne Cooper a likely winner. She has been nominated many times since 1989 and has yet to win, if voters were going only on name alone, she could come out ahead. If they voted based on viewing the tapes, then I'd say West or Forester could win. They both submitted tapes full of range, depth and moments that tug at your heart. West's tapes include one in which her character deals with her impending death and makes video tapes for her children and Jack, her ex-husband. Forester's tapes revolve around her character Cassie dealing with her daughter Tammy's death.

EAST/WEST'S ANALYSIS OF THE BEST-ACTRESS RACE: Maura West is going to repeat. She had the best submissions out of all the nominees. When Carly made the tape for her kids to watch, it was a true example of an actress rising above an asinine plot. Chappell is another actress who rises above poor material, but her submissions weren’t on the same level as West. Forester really surprised me w/her submissions. She really played the loss of a child for what it really is heartbreaking. Now the Y&R ladies. Neither of them deserve to be here. While Stafford was brilliant w/the dual roles it wasn’t anything special and she had better material to submit. Cooper really should just enter the supporting category from now because she has no business being here. These submissions are worse than last yr. In both of these submissions she was supporting, but apparently that doesn’t matter because of the Y&R sweep I see her pulling off an upset.

Should Win: Maura West
Will Win: Maura West
Upset: Jeanne Cooper
