Daytime Emmy – East/west explains his predix
LEAD ACTOR
David Canary is taking this. His powerhouse performance as a man deceived by his wife was some of the most powerful stuff on daytime last year. Anthony Geary is always great and his submissions (Luke heart problems and dream sequence) prove why he is always a contender. Even though Christian LeBlanc is the king of theatrics, his monologue and acting off of Ted Shackelford was superb. Peter Bergman's submissions were subtle, but they weren't anything compared to his Emmy-worthy submissions last year. Thaao Penghlis was creepy and campy fun as Andre (I mean he was a clown in one of his submissions). He really played the villain card to a tee.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Gina Tognoni will join Julia Barr as an actress who wins this category twice. When Dinah told Mallet she was "damaged goods," it was really heartbreaking and believable. Her brain injury story line was one of the highlights of "GL" last year. Heather Tom is always great and there's a reason she is a record-holder. (As of 2008, she has the most Emmy nominations for actresses under the age of 30.) She came on "B&B" in the latter part of the year and submitted what she had. If she doesn't win it this year, she will next year for sure. Kelley Menighan Hensley's submission was good, but I am kind of biased against it. She had great stuff that she should've been nommed for in 2007, and it doesn't help that I thought this story line was beneath her, but it doesn't change the fact that this submission could upset. Parts of Tracey Bregman were good, but the second tape fell flat for me. (This is another actress who deserves more than what she is given.) Judi Evans was great as Adrienne in the '80s, and if she deserved a second career nom, it would've been for her role as Paulina on "Another World." I always loved her as Bonnie, but this wasn't as funny as I thought it would've been and they barely used Adrienne, so I don't get the nomination at all. (If anyone should've been nommed from "Days," it should've been Martha Madison).
SUPPORTING ACTOR
This category is so boring to me. Kristoff St. John had the best submission out of all the nominees. His submission involved the "death" of his wife. And it wasn't like all of the deaths that are recognized by the Emmys. This was more laid back and subtle. Greg Rikaart plays creepy and vunerable well so I can see him winning a second Emmy. Brian Kerwin was so-so. Daniel Cosgrove had better episodes to submit. I thought Trent Dawson had the Emmy in his hands this year but chose the wrong tapes.
YOUNGER ACTRESS
The race is between Landon and Melvin. Jennifer Landon has two solid tapes (Gwen telling Will she buried Adam; Gwen and Cleo meet for the first time) so she might join Jennifer Finnigan in being only two performers who have won three Emmys in a row. Rachel Melvin's first tape was great (Chelsea finding out that Nick slept with Billie), but her second tape falls flat. The "Y&R" girls should cancel each other out. Emily O'Brien was the best actress out of the bunch. Her performance as a mentally disturbed young women was brilliant. Vail Bloom wasn't as bad as I thought (the waterworks in her submission definitely helped). Now Tammin Sursok: The material she had was good, but she isn't. There's the bad American accent and the fact that she replaced a popular actress (Emmy-nominated Adrianne Leon) so that the wack-job head writer and executive producer at the time (Emmy winner Lynn Marie Latham) can push the character in a different direction (Leon was too "fat" and spoke the truth). Jennifer Landon will win.
YOUNGER ACTOR
Tom Pelphery had the best submissions (Tammy's death and aftermath) out of all the nominees and he is such a powerhouse the academy should give him a second Emmy. I think it'll go to Van Hansis because of the media buzz of his story line and to make up for him not winning last year. Darin Brooks has that cool factor and his submission was laid back (Max fighting Ford and dancing with Stephanie). Jesse Lee Soffer was good in his submissions, but he was propping up Landon and that's what he was doing all last year. Bryton McClure's submissions were only seven minutes. If he were to win again, the academy will lose any credibility it has left.
