Ellen: No, I'm not quitting the Emmy race! Yes, I've set a wedding date!
After four previous wins, when Ellen finally lost best talk show for the first time ever, she nonetheless still won best talk host -- for the fourth consecutive time. The only time she lost that race was the first year of her show when Wayne Brady pulled off a shockeroo.
"It feels weird, like I'm not balanced," Ellen confessed to reporters as she leaned back and forth with an Emmy only in one hand.
Back in 1999 Oprah pulled out of the talk-host race after romping so often. A year later she pulled out of the series contest. So we asked Ellen backstage tonight if she'd ever withdraw herself or her show from competition and she said, "No!"
"Oprah has made so many bad career choices," she joshed. "Just look what's happened to her."
Ellen revealed that she and Portia, yes, have set a date for their wedding, but didn't reveal what day it'll be. She also said that Portia has an engagement ring, which Portia had flashed to reporters on the red carpet earlier tonight. Now they're busy planning an extravagant wedding since gay nuptials are OK in California. We asked her: How does she think her fans and the public in general will respond?
"I hope that gay weddings will soon be so acceptable that it'll seem strange that we never had them before," she said. "Like we can't believe women never had the vote."
While Ellen was on the dais talking to reporters, the gang that beat her show for best chat program approached, sounding gregarious.
"Oh, here comes the Rachael Ray people sounding all happy!" Ellen said, feigning disappointment. But as Rachael got close, Ellen told us, "I'm thrilled for her. Really."
