Emmy champ Katherine Heigl quits the race, blaming 'Grey's Anatomy' writers
It's very strange that Katherine Heigl's name is not on the TV academy's list of Emmy contenders after she won best supporting actress last year for "Grey's Anatomy." Over the past few months, as Emmy campaign season began, Katherine Heigl didn't announce that she'd be bowing out. Her omission from the official ballot just happened to be noticed yesterday by one of our forum posters. So we asked Heigl: Whazzup?
"I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention," she tells Gold Derby. "In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials."
It's not uncommon for past winners to withdraw from Emmy consideration, but they usually do so because they're repeating champs who feel they've won enough and want to give others a shot. That's what Candice Bergen ("Murphy Brown") and Bill Cosby ("The Cosby Show, "The Bill Cosby Show," "I Spy") did.
But Heigl's only won once, and it was a jaw-dropping victory at that. She was so stunned to hear her name announced when the envelope was opened that she got caught on national TV gasping a profanity. Apparently, that's the same word she might use to describe what she thinks of the reduced story line she got on "Grey's Anatomy" this past season despite proving her dramatic chops at the last Emmys. Clearly, she believes she was gypped out of a juicy role in order to publicly declare that she wasn't "given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination." One of the few dramatic turns she had on the show this past season involved rescuing a deer that had caused a string of car accidents. Big deal. She didn't even get to rescue a human being.
Initially, when we spotted Heigl missing from the ballot, I wondered if she had just forgotten to submit her name for consideration. That happens quite often, but few stars admit it. One who did so, famously, was Tim Allen ("Home Improvement"), who staged an elaborate stunt back in the 1990s after confessing that he forgot to submit his nomination the previous year. The next year he had his paperwork delivered to the TV academy headquarters in North Hollywood by the University of Southern California marching band.
Hey, we're talking Hollyweird here. All sneaky angles must be explored.
I asked the posters in our message boards what they think. Some responses below. See more: CLICK HERE .
Neurotic21: "This was not Heigl's season and she didn't quite have the material to back up a potential Emmy nod. Honestly, I think that was nice of her to do because she would have made the Top 10 (run-off). The door is now open for another actress, who may have had that great season, to get into that 10."
venom9176: "This is a pointed slam at the material she was given this season; there is going to be far more fallout from this than from pinning the blame on her publicist or agent or whoever was supposed to submit her. If she was going to lie to spare their feelings, she almost certainly wouldn't use this as a reason."
Michael Kennedy: "I think she is noble for doing it but I also agree that this is a slam at the show/writers/material given. She is not so innocent here -- had she felt someone else deserved a chance she should have said that and left it alone. She made a point to say it was material, what other reason would she say that for other than a slam? Remember this is the girl that made bad remarks about 'Knocked Up' after it was released and made her a movie star!"

This diva mentality of hers this early in her career could end it because no one will want to work with her. If she keeps it up, she will probably be blacklisted in Hollywood due to her consistent and very public bashing of her peers and other creative people that she's worked with over the years. The writers on Greys Anatomy are the ones who made her a star by making her character likable. Katherine Heigl and her prickly personality in real life didn't. She should at least pretend that she's grateful in public and get her agent and lawyers to increase her roll on the show.

Well, obviously Heigel has forgotten that five years ago she was a struggling, out-of-work actress with not even an IDEA of being nominated for ANY award. Sounds to me like, in typical fashion for her, she is biting the hand that feeds her and is trying to be controversial about nothing. There was a writer's strike for god's sake. How is THAT for dtanding behind the people who wrote you to an Emmy win LAST year? Billious, ungrateful, and self-absorbed, Heigel better watch it...wont be long before she is begging for a spot on "The Surreal Life" or some other celebreality show when the studios and producers turn against her. She is at best a B actress with a A-list mentality....Such a shame. So much for her career....

I think Katie should be careful. If her head gets too big about her importance in the acting world, she may well be one of those people who winds up without work. She is good, but she isn't a huge star. And her ego seems a little too big for her reality.

I agree with Jay that it looks like Heigl is trying to get fired. What a totally ungracious comment. I agree that her material at the beginning of this season was not the best, but the writers aren't going to hit it out of the park everytime.

Katherine Heigl is the opposite of graceful. As a writer, I know no team of writers sets out to do anything but stellar work. So I think to specifically cite the material, especially material that was impacted by a strike that put schedules into a flux, is beyond rude.
I was with Katherine about her "Knocked Up" remarks. I'm not with her on these. Luckily, she can go back to doing work on such winning material as "27 Dresses."
Sorry, Shonda and team. You do not deserve this.

Oh, Saint Katherine. She won one Emmy (undeservedly, in my opinion) and she had a popular movie. She's still not a superstar by any means. Her comments and actions reek of prima donna. I'm fairly certain that none of her acting peers felt like they needed her to "step aside" so that they could win this year. Similarly, blaming this ego-driven, do-gooder decision on the quality of material she was given is thankless. Why bite the hand of a show that brought you success in the first place? She's got nerve. And I can just see it now: she'll never enter her work again and then say, "well, I won every time I tried." She needs to get over herself—and fast—before he audience decides to.

The word "gypped" is considered politically incorrect these days. Perhaps you don't know the origin of the word--it comes from "Gypsies" and needs no further explanation.

My thing is did anyone else forget about the major STRIKE that happened during the season.... Yes, Izzie didn't have a great season but maybe they thought it was time to give someone on the show a little bit more praise.
All last season was about Denny.. and crap.. It is called Grey's Anatomy not Steven's Anatomy.
After this season... I wonder what the show would be like w/o Izzie and I don't think it would change that much.
Maybe she should close her mouth and she'd get better roles.

It seems to me too that is just an opinion, not negative issue. And yes, unfortunally this season "Izzie" was pathetic and so-so beside the other one where she was outstading in Grey's anatomy. Pus: I admire her oppinion and yes, I'm agree with some of her comments

Clearly, this is one more step in getting released from her contract ASAP.

What I like about Heigl is her candor, and the sense that she may actually be speaking her mind, as opposed to the official, politically correct line drummed up by all her handlers. I thought her remarks about Knocked Up were right on the mark. It was a delightfully funny comedy and it had streaks of misogyny. What her role that great, no, but was she good? Yes.

I am very disappointed by this article. Heigl has done a decent thing and is getting slammed unfairly. The press has spent the past year slamming the storylines especially for her character and the George and Izzie relationship but she isn't allowed to comment that she doesnt think she had the best material this year. That is so two faced of the media. It stinks.

It's nice of her to give someone else a chance, but she likes to take shots at people. Her Emmy speech when she said her mom didn't think she could win - did you see her mom's face? She looked so hurt. Her character didn't have much to do this season, but she doesn't have to publicly slam the writers.

The writing on the show totally blew chunks this year. Her character really suffered. After having been an interesting, driven character, suddenly she's narcissitic creep like many other characters on the show. My hunch is that the producers brought in the younger Grey character to siphon off Izzy interest since she was becoming a movie star. Plus, she was right about Knocked Up: it was a load of sexist crap dressed up as a dude movie about babies.

Her rep as a Diva only continues, she's slamming writers and show runners. Her response sounds pompus to say the least. Take some responsibility here, I've seen actors take less than stellar material and score awards. It's called the ACTING award, not the WRITING award. If she chooses to judge writers, them join the writer peer group and cast a secret ballot.

This girl is so ungrateful. Attacking Knocked Up and now the writers of Grey's Anatomy. Why does anyone want to work with her with this attitude. Shonda Rhimes and the writers at Grey's Anatomy should just not write for her at all.

It seems to me as if everybody is taking her remarks in a particularly negative matter. I did not hear a slam against anybody, just that her role was not as intense as previously and that she did not want to rely on last years performances to get nominated this year. I thought it was a positive move on her part and I applaud her for being real.
