'Mad Men,' 'Dexter,' 'Grey's Anatomy,' 'Boston Legal' and 'House M.D.' will make Emmy's list of top 10 drama series, our experts say

Before a TV series can be among the five nominees for Emmy's best drama, it must first make the top 10 runoff after a popular vote is conducted of the TV academy's 14,000 members. That balloting starts this week and ends June 20. Next, judges evaluate a sample episode of the 10 finalists. Their scores are combined on a 50-50 basis with results of the original popular vote, thus determining the five nominees that will be unveiled on July 17.

I've asked this jury of esteemed Emmy gurus to join me in predicting the top 10 finalists for best drama series: Mike Ausiello (now with Entertainment Weekly, formerly with TV Guide), Marc Berman (MediaWeek), Ray Richmond (Hollywood Reporter) and our two resident Emmy gurus Robert "Rob L" Licuria (AwardsHeaven.net) and Chris "Boomer" Beachum.

Here's a rundown of all of the top series in contention, which I handicapped recently in The Envelope's Emmy print section in the L.A. Times, CLICK HERE.

Below, the "logic" behind my predictions. Let's start with last year's top 10 finalists. Because Emmy's popular voting usually looks like a TV repeat, we should expect most to return.

Three aren't on the air anymore ("The Sopranos," "Rome") or aren't eligible this voting period ("24"). At least one of the others has lost most of its buzz and heat ("Heroes"). I fear that the same is true — admittedly, to a lesser degree — for "Friday Night Lights" despite continued huzzahs from TV critics and the show's low viewership. Some of my fellow gurus are picking it to return, and they may be right, but I'm taking a flier on a few newbies to the top 10.

Bottom line: expect the other 5 shows to return: "Boston Legal," "Dexter," "Grey's Anatomy," "House M.D." and "Lost."

"The Tudors" probably came close to getting in last year. Emmy voters, like Oscar voters, are usually suckers for British royalty stuff. This year "The Tudors" has gotten even better ("fantastic" is the word I'd use) and it recently unspooled at the tail end of the Emmy voting period. Smart skedding.

I was shocked "Brothers & Sisters" didn't make it last year. Especially since it's an acting-heavy drama for boomers (the average age demographic of Emmy voters). Following Sally Field's notorious win as best drama dame last year (you can't possibly have forgotten how the Emmycast censored her anti-war rant), the show will probably, finally, be a finalist.

Just to make sure that TV academy voters didn't forget "Damages" after it debuted last summer and wrapped up in early fall, FX network sent campaign DVDs to TV academy voters twice— once in September and again last month. That means they'll remember it now while inevitably recalling all of the critical acclaim it received upon its debut.

"Mad Men" will make the cut, of course. It's the hottest new cable series. It's probably the front-runner to win.

So what will the 10th entry be? So far, I haven't cited a single HBO drama and at least one must be a finalist, right? Heck, the pay channel's had at least one nominee in this race for the past nine years. How could it miss making the top 10 altogether?

"Big Love" could certainly make it, especially considering that HBO's ho-hum "Rome" made last year's list. But "Big Love" has lost a bit of its cache and has a really big Ick Factor considering that creepy, real polygamy case going on in Texas. (Or maybe that actually helps, do you think?

Sure, there's "The Wire" as an HBO Emmy alternative, but it didn't make the finalist list over the last two years. Why should we think "The Wire" could finally prevail now that the series has ended? Usually, off air means out of Emmy voters' minds.

I'm going to go with "In Treatment" in my 10th slot because I can't imagine HBO getting shut out of this rundown completely. Yes, TV ratings were very low and, frankly, I thought the series (what I watched of it) was a snooze. But I also think that it has a high Cool Quotient and I believe that its focus — therapy — is of infinite fascination to the self-absorbed wackos of Hollyweird.

What's really gutsy about my 10 predix is that four are cable series not telecast by HBO. No non-HBO cable series has ever been nominated for best series, drama or comedy, and only one has ever made the top 10 for drama series: "Dexter."

However, I'm sticking my Emmy neck out here because I think this'll be a milestone year for non-HBO cable at these TV kudos. HBO will continue to do well, too, but primarily in the races for best comedy series ("Entourage," "Curb Your Enthusiasm") and TV movies/minis. And it might be shut out completely here.

Wheres the nomination for Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles!?!?!? :-O

I love hugh laurie!!!! He saw awesome!!!!hugh you are the best

MOONLIGHT! They shouldn't have canceled it. The show's brilliant! But these lists are so boring and predictable. They practically pick the same shows every year. The Emmy's are like Homecoming in high school. You always know who's going to be nominated. And you always know who's going to win. BORING! It's like watching upper class men congratulate each other on the back in the smoking room. A lot of shows that deserve to be nominated will never get a shot because they're just not "popular" among the people who do the nominating. Sound like high school anyone?

I love most of the shows mentioned, but I wish emmy voters would notice Battlestar Galactica. Best show on television. Deserves an emmy win much more than Tudors or even Boston Legal.

Tom -- RE: your handicapping in the print section... You have "Eureka" listed as a longshot for both Drama and Comedy series (indeed, that would be a very, very longshot!) but you don't have "Eli Stone" anywhere in either category. Was that an oversight or do you really believe it has even less of a chance of cracking the top 10 than "Private Practice" and "Medium"?

Personally, I'd be thrilled to see "Lost", "Mad Men", "Damages", "Dexter", and "Eli Stone".

I think it is interesting that all three of the GoldDerby folks didn't pick The Wire. Since these are the people I think are most familiar with the voting process, I am going to say, sadly, The Wire is out. I hope that I am wrong.

Also, for a couple years now the show, "House" has been just that: "House". Not "House, MD".

I agree with Phil that Battlestar Galactica should get some recognition for the four years of quality drama it has delivered. He's also right in saying that it'll probably never happen because it falls in the science fiction category, which is notoriously shunned by the Emmy's. Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell and Michael Hogan deserve nominations (at the very least) and Ron Moore and David Eick deserve more than the special FX Emmy's that the show has won in the past.. Here's to hoping for the impossible!

Boston Legal and House are both ridiculously silly and cartoonish, I am truly shocked whenever either tired show is praised.

Grey's Anatomy and Lost both managed to recover and come back to form this year, but it's probably too little too late.

Dexter is still my pic for best drama on TV. Over-the top plot, dark humor but still one of the msot compelling and best written shows on tv

The Emmys are for more than just regular TV series, but all the pundits are seeming to forget that. What about miniseries like "John Adams" or made-for-TV films like "Recount"? It would be nice if the experts gave us their predictions on those, for a change.

The best TV drama is Battlestar Galactica. I guess they'll never nominate it because it's a science fiction show from the Sci Fi Channel, but it's better than any of the shows that have been considered.

BURN NOTICE. is no one else watching the reruns of this show? it beat Mad Men in the ratings by 2 MILLION VIEWERS, and they were UP AGAINST EACH OTHER. good gravy, i just have a hard time believeing this show is being critically swept under the rug.

"LOST" had a very strong 1st Season, then 2 was okay and 3 was better. 3 was rocky, then strong, then rocky, then ended with a bang and really reminded us fans of classic and mysterious "LOST". Season 4 sure has a great chance. To most fans, it's the best season. Constant brilliance, constantly amazing.

The Wire should not only finally get the nod but get the bloody award as it was the best show on tv

I can't even believe more critics aren't giving The Wire a shot. If it doesn't make the list this year, meaning that throughout it's superb run it NEVER wins an Emmy, as far as I'm concerned the Emmy's will have sealed their reputation as a pure joke. There is NO reason why this show shouldn't be winning every major award, given that it is literally miles above almost everything else on television (yes even BSG, as much as I love it, can't really compare to the breadth and depth of the Wire.

Boston Legal is beyond inane, I cannot believe it keeps making these lists.

What About AMC's Breaking Bad??? I think it's one of the best series of the last ten years or so? Or is it that only seven episodes, dpesn't make it a contender?

These are all great shows, but why do they never give Battlestar Galactica a chance? It really is the best show on television, so well written and yet year after year it's snubbed. They've really opened up to cable television shows in the past few years, so why is it any different?

"Heroes" was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series last year (along with "House", "The Sopranos", "Grey's Anatomy", and "Boston Legal".)

TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES!!!!

"The Wire" was the best show on television. It won the WGA award for Best Drama. If it isn't even nominated, the voters didn't do their jobs.

G'Day Tom
great table. I agree that House, Grey's, Boston Legal, Dexter, Mad Men, Damages and Lost is likley.

Just a correction. I'm pretty sure Big Love wasn't eligible last year (it took a break like some HBO shows do). The year before it was and it made the top 10 (probably ahead of emmy fave 6FU).
