Now — wow — there are a whole, whopping five women who've ever won Tony Awards for directing

June 15, 2008 |  8:18 pm

Tonight Anna Shapiro ("August: Osage County") became the fifth woman to win an award for directing during the 62 years of Tonys history. Previous champs: Julie Taymor ("The Lion King") and Garry Hynes ("The Beauty Queen of Leenane") in 1998, Susan Stroman ("The Producers") in 2001, and Mary Zimmerman ("Metamorphoses") in 2002. Of course, that is five more women than have won Oscars for directing.
