Tony Awards losers get bumped out of Broadway

June 20, 2008 |  3:14 pm

While the winners of last Sunday's Tony Awards have seen an uptick in their takings, two of the also-rans — "Cry-Baby" and "A Catered Affair" — have posted closing notices.

The tuner "Cry-Baby," which edged out "A Catered Affair" from the best musical race by just one vote, is shuttering this Sunday while "Affair" wraps on July 27. "Cry-Baby" was the second John Waters movie to be made into a musical. However, it failed to live up to the first, "Hairspray," which swept the Tony Awards in 2003, winning eight including best musical and best actor for Harvey Fierstein, while "Cry-Baby" lost all four of its bids.

The versatile Fierstein, who won one of his four Tonys in 1984 for adapting the film "La Cage Aux Folles" into a musical, had less success with "A Catered Affair," which failed to impress critics or Tony voters. The show failed to win any of its three nominations and received only an abbreviated chance to shine on the Sunday telecast.

And though he adapted the script and was featured in this charming chamber musical, Harvey Fierstein was snubbed by Tony voters. As the always outspoken Fierstein told the New York Times, "I’m neither beaten nor bowed. I am a little ashamed of the treatment we got, but I also know people weren’t being malicious. I knew you were either going to get this piece or not. That’s not going to stop me from doing it again."
