Boomer: A few of my favorite (and least favorite) Emmy things
Just got this interesting e-mail from Chris "Boomer" Beachum, our resident Emmy sage, good friend and forums moderator:
I think this is one of the best Emmy nominee lineups I've ever seen. Yes, there are a handful of bad noms and snubs (especially Blair Underwood, "Pushing Daisies"), but the voters did a great job this year of watching the episodes and making their choices.
A few surprise snubs I found (not saying they are bad, just surprises to me).
DRAMA SERIES
No Blair Underwood is a real shame (especially with Byrne, Wiest and Turman making it).
No Rose Byrne is a shocker (with all of the other acting slots for "Damages").
No Peter O'Toole (a pleasant surprise).
No Mira Sorvino (on one of the heavily-promoted "House" episodes).
No directing or writing nods for "Lost" (WOW!).
COMEDY SERIES
No "Pushing Daisies" for series (especially with all the other nods).
John Krasinski really deserved a slot this time.
No Matthew Broderick, Beau Bridges or Amy Ryan for guest.
MOVIE/MINI
No Michael Keaton, Alfred Molina or Kevin Kline (very surprising).
VARIETY
No George Carlin or Tracey Ullman for performance (and very thankful for no Barry Manilow).
Nothing for Justin Timberlake
My favorite things about this morning:
The break-out of other cable networks beyond HBO.
The overwhelming love for "Mad Men," "30 Rock" and "John Adams" (all well-deserved).
Getting rid of "Ugly Betty" and "Grey's Anatomy" at just the right moment.
Michael C. Hall finally breaking through.
"Lost" being welcomed back into the drama-series race.
Sarah Silverman with 3 nominations.
Tina Fey with 4 nominations.
Ricky Gervais with 4 nominations.
Don Rickles getting some overdue recognition.
Amy Poehler and Will Arnett both with nominations (and favorites now to win their categories).
My least favorite things about this morning:
Please stop it with James Spader and Tony Shalhoub (they have more than their share of Emmys).
I repeat . . . NO BLAIR UNDERWOOD is criminal.
Steve Buscemi gave maybe a 3-minute performance on "30 Rock" and gets nominated. Robin Williams' performance is not very good at all, but he gets in on name recognition. I can't believe the incredible number of noms for "Pushing Daisies" but not for Comedy Series.
The first time for NBC without a Drama Series slot (maybe ever?). Check that out, but I think it is at least back to the 1970s.

I did some research using IMDB and Wikipedia to see when NBC did not get a Drama Series nomination.
I didn't count the first 3 awards ceremonies since they were L.A. based and not national as they were from the 4th ceremony on.
The only year in which NBC did not get a Drama Series nomination before this year was in 1967 when Death of a Salesman, Playhouse and Mark Twain Tonight from CBS and Stage 67 (twice) from ABC were nominated.
The more you know.....:)

I was glad Fischer missed out on a nom for The Office. She was so bland this season.
Entourage and Two and a Half Men have NO place in the Series line-up, but thank God Ugly Betty didn't get in.
Grey's Anatomy only got, what, two nominations total? That makes me happier than it should.
Now how about Lost wins for Drama Series? Emerson has to win for Sup. Actor... it's bad enough Henry Ian Cusack was SNUBBED, but Emerson sent in a winning tape. He has to win.
The Office, I think, got lucky this year. Carell is consistently good, Wilson and Krasinski had good years, and Ryan was terrific, but the show has not lived up to the promise of its first two seasons. Their writing nod is undeserved.
I wish we could have seen more Flight of the Conchords (I can't believe Schaal and Darby missed out on the top ten), but four nominations is pretty impressive. I'm a little worried about them having two songs nominated against the Matt Damon song, because vote splitting is bound to happen and the Matt Damon song was an internet smash.
Pretty good nominees, overall. I think maybe people got a little over exuberant with the 30 Rock/Tina Fey love, but whatever.

I was actually surprised when Rose Byrne was picked as the front runner by Boomer earlier. From talking to others, it seems people either really like her or just don't get into her. I'm one of the people who don't get into her - she's fine but nothing special. Even if she got high marks for her submission video, I bet that her popular vote wasn't as high as everyone thought. I wish they would release those numbers for all the categories - that would be really interesting!!!

I feel the lack of damages Rose Byrne
She did an excellent job in the first season of Damages and deserved to win and an indication
Rose Byrne is a great actress

This is so disappointing =( Rose was even nominated for a Golden Globe and now she's not even in the running for an Emmy this year! =( I sure hope they will recognise her next year!

I have a hard time with any learned person dismissing Robin William's performance as not very good. His was one of those heartfelt performances pulled from the depths of the soul. Williams made a somewhat ludicrous and unbelievable script worth watching. Brilliant.

I am always shocked that 30 Rock doesn't get supporting actor/actress nods. For my money, Jack McBrayer (as Kenneth) and Jane Krakowski (as Jenna) are the best supporting performers in TV comedy right now. It amazes me that 30 Rock gets 17 nods and yet these players continue to get ignored.
