No, Eva Longoria Parker is not snubbing the Alma Awards!
Well, you can imagine what people thought when the rumor was confirmed that Eva Longoria Parker took her name out of the running for this year's Alma Awards, which recognize the best achievement of Latino performers.
How do you say "diva" in Spanish?
As if Eva Longoria Parker didn't have reason enough to act all uppity after "Desperate Housewives" made her an A-lister, now she's part of a superstar couple being married to b-ball giant Tony Parker. Has it all gone to her pretty head?
Sure enough Eva Longoria Parker's name was not on the list of nominees when they were unveiled this week (SEE HERE), but not because Eva was snubbing the kudos. In fact, she plans to host the ceremony on Sept. 12 when it's televised by ABC.
"I'm involved in the balloting and the selection process and the committee," she explained to reporters at this week's news conference. "So for me it was a conflict of interest" to enter her name in competition.
Also, she feels that it's time for other, newer stars to be recognized. Eva Longoria Parker has won two Alma Awards in the past (2002, 2006).
"Everybody knows 'Desperate Housewives,' " she said. "Let's recognize the people that you may not know on certain shows."
Those include the likes of three stars who received Alma nominations this week for starring on Disney Channel's "Wizards of Waverly Place": Jake T. Austin, Maria Canals-Barrera and Selena Gomez. "Wizards of Waverly Place" tied "Ugly Betty" and "Without a Trace" for reaping the most bids (three).
But also on the list was Eva Longoria Parker's lusty "Desperate Housewives" costar Ricardo Chavira, who plays Carlos, her ex-hubby and sometimes renewed flame.
"I had nothing to do with that!" Longoria assured reporters. "It was all him!"
Longoria explained why these kudos are so special to her: "I think the only person that I knew who was Latino when I was growing up was Rita Moreno on 'West Side Story.' There weren't a lot of Latino role models.
"That's why the Alma Awards are so important because we celebrate and recognize and honor the contribution of Latinos."
