ANSWER: Asner, Carney, Knotts and Bergen all won five. Kelsey Grammer only won four Emmys as Frasier Crane on "Frasier, " which holds the record for most wins among all series (37). He was nominated as Frasier Crane twice for "Cheers" and once for a guest role on "Wings," but lost those bids.
Candice Bergen won five for "Murphy Brown" and Don Knotts for "The Andy Griffith Show."
Ed Asner won three times as Lou Grant on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and twice for "Lou Grant. " Technically, Art Carney's five Emmys as Ed Norton were for two different shows, but they were really the same thing. —The Honeymooners" was a separate program for a brief while, but otherwise was part of "The Jackie Gleason Show."

When I posted my first comment, I hadn't research anything, I just did it from memory. After checking IMDB, Art Carney won 6 Emmys for playing Ralph Cramden on 3 different shows (Although "the Honeymooners may just have been a renaming of the "The Jackie Gleason Show"). Kelsey Grammer has the MOST nominations, but that wasn't the question. Shouldn't KG have listed 5th when giving the answer.

Candice Bergen won 5 Emmys portraying Murphy Brown (1989, 1990, 1992, 1994 and 1995)
Kelsey Grammer only won 4 Emmys for his Frasier role (1994, 1995, 1998and 2004)

I think Candice Bergen also won 5 emmys playing for Murphy Brown.
According to this post, it is hard to tell who won. You list Kelsey Grammer first, but Ed Asner has more emmys and you don't even mention Candice Bergin.

If Entourage were to ever spin-off an Ari Gold show, I think Piven could top Grammer's 4.
