Expect 'Religulous' and Bill Maher to raise Oscars hell

August 20, 2008 | 10:28 am

When I attended a press screening for Bill Maher's "Religulous" in New York on Tuesday, it struck me like a lightning bolt on the road to the Kodak Theatre via Damascus: yeah, "Religulous" will probably be nominated for best docu at the Oscars — and God help us all after that.

We know that "Religulous" is seriously in the derby for several reasons. First, Lionsgate hired veteran Oscars PR reps to handle its ballyhoo (Michele Robertson in L.A., Jeff Hill in New York). Secondly, the studio is giving the documentary its theatrical runs in L.A. and New York to qualify it for academy consideration, as Jeff Sneider notes at Anne Thompson's blog at Variety.com. Thirdly, the hallelujahs that film critics gave it today at the screening. More disciples are sure to follow.

In order to catch on widely like religion itself, what atheism has needed for a long time is a popular preacher to rally 'round. Maher just volunteered for the job that's been vacant since Madalyn Murray O'Hair vanished in the 1990s (eventually found murdered in 2001). Richard Dawkins has been a fine temporary stand-in, but not flashy like O'Hair. Bill Maher kicks things up a notch. He's a pop culture hipster who already has a large, anti-establishment flock, and he has a bully pulpit that O'Hair didn't: his own HBO show plus vast presence across all media.

Up until recently, I didn't realize how few Americans knew about the historical argument against Jesus. As the product of 16 years of Catholic education — from St. Mary's Elementary School in Mentor, Ohio, to the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. — I've had more than a casual interest in the pro and con issues. Two years ago, when "The Da Vinci Code" was the big buzz, I was amazed at how many people were shocked when I'd say something like, "Well, there is no historical evidence that Jesus ever existed."

What?! I could expect outrage over the comment but not surprise from sophisticated, educated people, religious or not. Doesn't everybody know that Roman and Jewish writers who were alive during the time that Jesus is said to have lived do not mention him?  Contemporary historical accounts record lots of other messiah figures but somehow manage to miss the one who Christian texts claim posed such a huge threat to the powers that be that the Roman leaders had to crucify him. The first historic record of Jesus doesn't come till AD 93 — more than a half century after the date given for Jesus' crucifixion — and that account, allegedly by Josephus, is widely disputed, as is another oft-cited mention of Jesus in 120 by Tacitus. In "Religulous," you can see lots of shocked faces when Bill Maher mentions casually that none of the people who wrote the Bible — including Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, even St. Paul — ever met Jesus. They're flabbergasted. They can't believe what they're hearing.

Many devout Christians who are aware of these facts accept them and continue to practice their religion anyway because their beliefs are based on faith, and that's fine. There is no historical evidence that says Jesus didn't exist, so God bless them, I say.

But I don't think that most Christians know about the lack of historical evidence or some other hot topics that Maher dares to bring up in "Religulous" — like how many of America's Founding Fathers blasted religion. Maher quotes Benjamin Franklin's line "Lighthouses are more useful than churches," and really nasty stuff from Thomas Jefferson and John Adams.

Most Americans, I've come to learn, really believe that our Founding Fathers were devout Christians. The history books used in our schools somehow fail to quote what Jefferson thought on the subject: "Christianity is the most perverted system that ever shone on man."

"Religulous" not only whips up these subjects but does so in a well-made film that is — God help us all —entertaining. Maher, after all, is a master comedian and satirist.

And he's a savvy media guru too. He's doing lots of PR to push "Religulous" while teaming up with his director, Larry Charles ("Borat"). When "Religulous" opens in theaters in October, and media buzz is cranked up high, it'll certainly cause religious uproar, which will only fuel further interest.

Thus Oscar voters will be forced to pay attention to "Religulous" and, assuming it gets enough good reviews — which I think it will — it will be taken seriously by them as a film. So far it's not a strong year for documentaries, so, barring divine intervention, I think it's in the derby.

Jesus existed. No one could invent a first-century charismatic rabbi who outlandishly counseled us to "love our enemies."

That historically rare bit of profound wisdom challenges all of humankind. The sayings, parables and aphorisms of the historical Jesus found between the lines of church filler in the gospels are incredibly unique and speak to a way of seeing and acting that are necessary for our species' survival.

Well, thanks to people like Pat Robertson, who preaches hate, and our current president, who thinks Jesus wants war, Christianity has become a joke. I think the Republican "Right" has opened the door to atheist like Maher. He is not being any more blasphemous than the religious and political leaders that teach HATE and INTOLERANCE. What would Jesus do? Well, I don't believe he would want us to love our guns and profits more than our poor. I don't think he would be fighting abortion, he would be too busy trying to provide health care, food, and shelter for the women and children who are in situations they didn't necessarily choose. Whether you believe in Christ or not, he is a savior for ALL people, not just the gun-toting, gay-hating, narrow-minded 'right', who happen to be so very wrong.
(and, yes, I am a Christian, but lately that label is embarrassing me).

All worship me and my noodly appendages, for I am the one true God!!!! Jehovah is a myth.....

Hi,
I was born Catholic. The problem is, we are all brainwashed at a young and impressionable age to believe whatever ridiculous religion we were born in to.
All we have to do is treat others the way we want to be treated! It is that simple!! Religions were invented to keep uneducated people and children in line.
Yet we keep this silliness going and going, from generation to generation, amazing! Brainwashing is so powerful, it is clearly difficult to forget or question
what was put in your brain as a child. People are so scared to speak against a possible god or to look bad in front of others by doing so, so it goes on and on.
Thanks to Priests, some comics and just being an intelligent adult, I'm no longer part of the Catholic religion.

Archaeologists and biblical scholars are disputing the interpretation of a stone tablet dating from the 1st century BC which appears to show the concept of resurrection was in Jewish tradition decades before the birth of Jesus Christ....

I have often heard at the funeral of a very young person "it is such a tragedy that she was taken so young, but she is in a better place with god ". It always takes will power on my part not to say "then where is the tragedy?

Maher and Larry Charles sounds like a great team.

Why don't we call a cease fire on this already? The Founding Fathers set up this country so that you can believe whatever you want to believe. You can be a Christian, atheist, Buddhist, Muslim etc etc

Don't force your beliefs on other people. Freedom to worship or not worship is one of this country's core democratic values.

I wouldn't be surprised if Maher only interviews religious fanatics to use as straw men. I will bet he won't be interviewing Jim Wallis or Desmond Tutu.

I generally find Maher funny as all get out and we need someone to fill the empty spot left by George Carlin's loss.

Can't wait to see the film.

Hope this brings people to the conclusion that: GOD WAS CREATED BY MAN!

Keep up the good work Bill.

For those who say he doesn't attack muslim? Do a google search or stay a retard.

"Religulous Clip: Bill Maher in a Burka Store"
"Maher is in the midst of questioning a somber Muslim cleric when he's interrupted by the cleric's cellphone, whose ring tone is Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir."

This film feels like a response to the rise of religion in the public square. Faith is a personal matter, and so is lack thereof. However, since religions evangelize, why can't atheists?

And to all the born-agains who are angry that Bill mocks their beliefs - do not judge, lest ye be judged. Do unto others.... Sound familiar? Those are your rules, play by them.

Bill Maher might have a good perspective on religion, but he isn't very funny. Maher grew up in upper class NJ, went to an Ivy League university, and has basically never known anything close to socio/economic strife in his entire life. His snideness is his glaring character trait and he is blind to it. I have nothing good to say about most religions myself, but Maher is the complete wrong icon to be the spokesperson for this important debate.

All religions are goofy. Atheists are just as dogmatic, narrowminded, and preachy as religious people. Religion has done harm to the world, but if it didn't exist people would find some other pretense to harm each other. Religion has also caused a lot of good in the world. If Bill Maher hated religion, he'd remove music from his film. Christ, I don't even believe in religions. But I care when Bill Maher pretends like he has something new and interesting to say, and can't even deliver punchlines without being smug. He should probably be off buying his next girlfriend.

anybody remember Thomas Jefferson, one of the Core Architects of America?

In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own.

-Thomas Jefferson, letter to Horatio G. Spafford, March 17, 1814

All religious people are atheists as to everyone else's god. We atheists just believe in one less god than do believers.

There has naver been any proof that any superntural event has ever occured in history. if miracles happened in ignorant, superstitious, pre scientific times, whey don't they happen now?

Athesim is merely an affirmation of the most likely truth about the natural universe.

Another mockumentary by Billy What else is new under the sun???
Bill makes a pretty good livin' makin' fun of religion. Makes you wonder if religion is his money maker just like the TV preachers:)

Bill Maher has an agenda?? My dad to me years ago to never trust any idea or anyone I wasn't allowed to question. It seems that if you even question the very idea of Christianity, you're instantly villified. Questioning our world and wanting answers is what has propelled science and furthered our civilization. But who needs questions and science when there's a magical man in the sky with all the answers.

"Turn to Him now before it is too late. He will clean you from the inside out just like He did to me."

I thought that someone should tell you that you need special help. Not just any kind of help, like speaking to someone. You should retreat to a mental facility and have the best doctors work on you, so you can enjoy the rest of your life in a rational manner.

Religion all too often receives a free ride. I think it should be put under a microscope just like anything else. Nothing wrong with questioning people's political beliefs but religion somehow has a special protection. Why?

As a wise man once said it takes a lot of faith to be atheist.

Praise jesus for someone like Maher!

Religulous may get nominated but I don't think it will have much of a chance of winning against this documentary (Trouble the Water): http://www.salon.com/ent/movies/btm/?last_story=/ent/movies/btm/feature/2008/08/21/trouble_the_water/

Seneca said it best: "Religion is regarded by the many as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful." Or, as Napoleon put it "Religion is excellent stuff for keeping the common people quiet." It's a con, it's all about control. We fear death - naturally, that will be taken advantage of - religion simply takes advantage of the worst in human nature to manipulate and control the gullible. If there's a heaven, why do we not have our mailboxes stuffed with invitations from the elderly to celebrate imminent death? If they actually believe somebody up there on a cloud is waiting for them, they should be thrilled to be pronounced terminal, not crying, screaming and messing their pants. Your own fear gives those who own you the club they hold over your head - fear begs to be exploited, and it works so well. I wear a t-shirt that says "If you believe the meek will inherit the earth, you're just where they want you" and you'd be surprised how many stop me and ask where to get one, or whisper that they too, stopped buying that crap. Read "Bertrand Russell's Best" - works like medicine. Live clean and free of supersition, be rational, and you live your life in a better neighborhood.

I can't wait for this movie's release. For those of you who wonder if he'd say something about Mohammed, he does. He even recently called for the new Pope to be thrown in jail because of the way he wanted to cover up all the sexual abuse. He compared it to how would you react if he was a CEO of babysitting company, would he get a pass? Maher has always been critical of any and every religion. It's a crutch people hold onto because they don't want to think of things rationally. He was raised religious, he's read the bible, he knows his/it's crap. This movie should be good, just to show the ignorance of how people hold onto faith over facts,

For some of you, youtube George Carlin, Religion is BS
