'Doubt' teaser poster is out. Can you smell Oscar in the air?

August 4, 2008 |  6:25 pm

The first teaser poster is out for "Doubt," which undoubtedly will be a major Oscar player.

The Broadway show upon which this film is based won four Tony Awards out of eight nominations: best play, actress (Cherry Jones), featured/supporting actress (Adriane Lenox) and director (Doug Hughes).

Its author is a notable Oscar veteran — John Patrick Shanley, who won for writing "Moonstruck" in 1987. This film adaptation is produced by the same chap who staged the play — Scott Rudin, who had two best-picture nominees in last year's derby: "No Country for Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood."

Oh, yeah, and this film stars Meryl Streep, who holds the record for most Oscar nominations among performers (14). However, Meryl Streep only has two wins (lead for "Sophie's Choice," supporting for "Kramer vs. Kramer"), which is half as many as Katharine Hepburn.

So some Oscarwatchers think the poor dear is due another one in a hurry. Lucky for Streep she has the same role that won Cherry Jones the Tony for best actress — a nun who accuses a priest (Philip Seymour Hoffman, best actor winner, "Capote") of molesting a boy. Also stars Amy Adams, past nominee for best supporting actress ("Junebug").
