And the winners of the award for best Emmy predix: Matt Mitovich and Rob Licuria

September 23, 2008 | 12:19 pm

Congrats to Matt Mitovich of TVGuide.com and The Envelope's Rob Licuria for reaping the highest scores in our Emmy pundit smackdown!

Both gurus nailed 12 of 17 top categories and crushed 22 other Emmy seers.

I'm kicking myself for forgetting to vote in the category for reality TV host. I planned to pick Jeff Probst — really! He gets most screen time interacting with contestants! — after I watched the DVD screeners in that race, but I got sidetracked, time ran out, I left the category blank and, alas, I must settle for landing in second place among our 24 competing gurus with a score of 11 correct predix. At least I'm in good company: Michael Ausiello (Entertainment Weekly) and Marc Berman (MediaWeek) also scored 11.

As you can see, Team TV Journos is larger, consisting of 18 notable writers who cover the TV beat and Team The Envelope consisted of six award nuts like me. While the journos got 154 of their 306 predictions correct for an average of 50.3%, the Envelopers edged them out with 55 of their 102 predictions correct for an average of 53.9%.

The program winners proved to be far easier to predict than the performing ones. Easiest to foresee was variety series with 17/18 journos and 5/6 Envelopers predicting "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" to win its sixth consecutive Emmy, then comedy series with 16/18 journos and 5/6 Envelopers foreseeing "30 Rock" to repeat, mini-series with 15/18 journos and all six Envelopers voting for "John Adams," drama series with 14/18 journos and 5/6 Envelopers opting for freshman "Mad Men" and finally reality competition series with 11 journos and 4 Envelopers favoring "The Amazing Race" to win its sixth consecutive Emmy.

Among the series acting races, comedy lead actor Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock") was the choice of 14/18 journos and 5/6 Envelopers while drama lead actress Glenn Close ("Damages") was the pick of 12/18 journos and all six Envelopers. Only a minority of journos (8/18) and Envelopers (2/6) foresaw Tina Fey ("30 Rock") taking comedy lead actress, while only Ausiello and I predicted that victory by Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad") for drama lead actor.

Drama supporting winners Zeljko Ivanek ("Damages") and Dianne Wiest ("In Treatment") were favored by only 1 and 5 journos, respectively, and 1 Enveloper while comedy supporting actor Jeremy Piven ("Entourage") was the pick of 6 journos and 5 Envelopers, and comedy supporting actress Jean Smart ("Samantha Who?") was the choice of only 2 journos and no Envelopers.

Riding the "John Adams" wave, 14 journos and all six Envelopers foresaw victory for lead actor Paul Giamatti, but only 10/18 journos and no Envelopers thought Laura Linney would win lead actress in a movie or mini. "Recount" was favored to win best movie by only 6/18 journos and 3/6 Envelopers, and only 2 journos and 1 Enveloper thought Jeff Probst ("Survivor") would be the first winner of the reality host Emmy.
