Marvin Hamlisch chats about all those awards on his mantle
Composer Marvin Hamlisch — one of only 10 people to win all four big showbiz awards (Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony) — steps out of the wings Thursday night with his appearance at Seth's Broadway Chatterbox in New York. Host Seth Rudetsky showcases the highs and sometimes lows of a guest's career in a freewheeling interview. And Hamlisch certainly has had his share of stage hits ("A Chorus Line") and misses ("Jean").
Of the 10 grand slam winners, Marvin Hamlisch has the most Oscars (three) and Grammys (four) and is tied with Mike Nichols for the most Emmys (four). Only Hamlisch and the very first grand slammer, Richard Rodgers, also have the Pulitzer Prize.
The fun unfolds Thursday at 6 p.m. at Gotham cabaret Don't Tell Mama with the $10 cover charge going directly to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. After the show, awards buffs could catch grand-slam winner Whoopi Goldberg in her last week of appearances in"Xanadu." That oddball musical is playing at a theater named for another grand slam winner — Helen Hayes.
By the way, the other five grand slam winners are Mel Brooks, John Gielgud, Audrey Hepburn, Rita Moreno and music arranger Jonathan Tunick.
