Can 'Changeling' change Angelina Jolie's Oscars luck?

October 25, 2008 |  5:53 pm

Why hasn't Angelina Jolie been nominated for an Academy Award since she won best supporting actress for 1999's "Girl, Interrupted"?

We explored this question a few weeks ago, when "Changeling" premiered at the New York Film Festival, but it hadn't yet opened nationally. Now that you are seeing "Changeling," let's get your opinion.

It's a fascinating Oscars mystery. Last year Angelina Jolie reaped noms for "A Mighty Heart" from the Golden Globes, SAG, Indie Spirits and Critics Choice -- but not the Oscars. Why? Is she in trouble with those notorious snobs in the film academy because of her tabloid life?

It's possible that Angelina Jolie was just one more casualty of war. Lots of films about U.S. involvement in the Mideast fell short of Oscar expectations ("Charlie Wilson's War," "In the Valley of Elah"), suggesting that academy members may have had battle fatigue.

Over all, Angelina Jolie is receiving generally upbeat reviews from top media like the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek and Rolling Stone.

Even though the actress gets slammed by Manohla Dargis of the New York Times, Dargis concedes that the performance "will doubtless earn Ms. Jolie another shot at an Oscar." But will it?

she is not a great actress by any means, its not hard to put on a fake accent. The only thing that keeps her going is her looks and tabloid life so for somone to say that hurts her... well maybe. But it also helps her a lot. Without that strange life she leads and the ability to snag Brad from Jen keeps people and producers interested in her.

Maggie, I agree with you. She is merely an adequate actress.
Her comments in Vanity Fair about how 'artists' bring up their children differently, taking them to art galleries and the theatre shows breathtaking ignorance and arrogance.

I saw the movie last night and thought her acting was emotional and believale. Regardless of what she does in life, she is a very good actress. I hope she gets a nomimation for her work

Why not? She talented star. She deserved to get an oscar

I find it ironic that in answer to the question about if Angelina's role in
"The Changeling" will lead to her winning an Oscar, Maggie, in your comments you focus on other aspects about Angelina without commenting on her acting ability, particularly as it is presented in this role.

This shows a bias that is not related to her acting in the film but is related to other aspects of her activities and character, as you perceive these to be.

You may dislike her as an individual, for whatever reason you may choose, but you have not even commented on her acting ability or how it is or is not displayed in the role that she plays in this film. (Other than your sarcastic remark about her "Mother Theresa" "act."

I think Angelina has some acting talent. I have not seen this film as of yet as it is not out in the theatre in my city currently. I have seen her in other films and I think she has some talent and ability. She like many people in acting, trained many years to develop a certain skill to this career.

Frankly, I have seen a few films that she has been in and I think undoubtedly she has some acting talent. She has done a better job in some than in others, as is usually the case with most actresses and actors.

I think it is unfair to suggest a total lack of sincerity on her part in her work with refugees. True, her celebratory status has given her an edge in this secondary career of hers. But at least she uses this to bring attention to these causes and to these people.

Of course, as you point out, this also has brought her a lot of attention: and that is the nature of her profession.

But can any of us judge another's heart and motives? Isn't that up to God to decide?

From what I have read, Angelina came to her other career (humanitarian causes, in particular that of Refugees) in a sincere and bona fide way, offering what help she could when filming the first Laura Croft film. I think this was not only out of compassion but also bona fide interest.

I also have worked with Refugees and have spoken internationally about their plight. I am also interested in film, as a way of conveying story and human experience.

Does this make me an insincere person as you suggest she is?

I think not.

As far as her relationship with Brad. Isn't that also pretty old news? As Jesus said when a woman was cought in adultery and was about to be stoned by the self righteous: "He whom has never sinned can cast the first stone."

Politically, why should she endorse Obama? Doesn't she have the same political rights as anyone else? She is not obligated to endorse him or anyone else.

I hope that Angelina continues to work to further the plight of Refugees. For there are currently aproximately 20 million Refugees worldwide.

Maggie, I want to wish you all the best. And I hope, if you have not already done, also find a cause that you can whole heartedly pursue for the betterment of the others. And that others will not judge you harshly and doubt your sincerity. For it seems that you are an articulate and intelligent person and have a lot to offer in this hurting and confusing world.

God Bless you and may you know Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour.

I end with a Bible verse in the New Testament, some words of Jesus: " Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of God..." and "I tell you that at that time many who are first shall be last and many who are last shall be first."

SHE IS BEAUTIFUL, TALENTED. WHY NOT? SHE DESERVE AN OSCAR

Nanci Eisner, my apology my comments was meant for Maggie.

Nanci Eisner, why are you keep bringing up Aniston? If Aniston and Brad married was solid no one can break that apart. If Angelina never crossed path with Brad, he'll be with another woman because he left Aniston before 2005. Their marriage crumbled after 3 years because one of the reason(if you don't know Nanci) was she wants Brad to get her career up not to have a family with him. Remember this Nanci, no one can steal a husband or wife. They 're usually fed up and unhappy with their relationship. Aniston and Brad can be friends but not meant to be a couple. Brad wants meaningful and satisfying life, majority of show biz wants money and to party and does not care what's going on around them.

Anglelina's face is a work of art and she is gorgeous and that's what hits you, but then her acting chops take over and her strength and at the same time vulnerability shine through.
I both she and Clint Eastwood get their well-deserved nomination for this movie, along with Amy Ryan for another riveting small role that becomes big. I didn't find the movie too long, paced badly. I found it interesting and extremely moving and well done. Brava to Mr. Eastwood and to Ms. Jolie. Being a mom, this must have been very emotionally draining.
Thank you.
Nanci in Manhattan

Quite honestly, I think people are sick of the whole "Mother Theresa" act she puts on. Being a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Darfur, etc. She steals another man's woman, gets bad press, so all of a sudden she's a policy wonk? Whatever. And not wanting to endorse (although people could care less) Obama? She's a freaking idiot.
