Oscars predix: 'Frost/Nixon' remains in the best-pic derby and is joined by 'The Reader' and 'Gran Torino'

October 20, 2008 |  1:48 pm

"The Reader" and "Gran Torino" emerge as serious Oscars contenders for best picture in our latest roundup of pundit predix. In the past, "The Reader" has been listed by many Oscarologists as a potential acting nomination for Kate Winslet (who also competes with "Revolutionary Road"), but now Pete Hammond (Notes on a Season, The Envelope) pushes it up to the top race.

Oscarsnoop154

Also noteworthy is that Pete — who has seen "Frost/Nixon" — isn't swayed by some recent negative buzz and continues to rank it in his best-pic lineup. He equivocates a bit in listing one of his other three selections for best flick, simply saying "something directed by Clint Eastwood" ("Changeling," "Gran Torino"). Joining him in the belief that "Gran Torino" may be the one is Sasha Stone (AwardsDaily), Jeffrey Wells (Hollywood-Elsewhere.com) and Scott Feinberg (Feinberg Files, The Envelope).

In the best-actress contest, Pete also covers both bases when dealing with Winslet's competing films. In the event one of his five ponies for best actor trip up, Pete expects Clint Eastwood ("Gran Torino") or Richard Jenkins ("The Visitor") to move into "the wild-card veteran slot," he says.

Three of our other gurus all put Jenkins in their top five for best actor: Susan Wloszczyna (USA Today), Brad Brevet (RopeOfSilicon.com) and Feinberg. Sasha joins Brevet in betting on Eastwood for an acting bid.

Brevet, Feinberg, Wells and Wloszczyna all join me in seeing a best-pic bid for "Slumdog Millionaire." Compare the predix below with our earlier pundit forecasts HERE and HERE.
