Will David Cook become a Grammy darling?

If, as many music gurus say, David Cook is "American Idol's" new rock superstar, that means he's the new Chris Daughtry. That means David Cook could be nominated for four Grammys soon, just like Daughtry. Right?

Entertainment Weekly gives the new disc a B grade, adding, "If you're expecting Daughtry 2: Post-Grunge Boogaloo, well . . . you're about right. Cook is clearly built in the guy-linered mold of that earlier Idol alum, though his debut owes just as much to the expert hands that craft it, including producers Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance) and Brian Howes (Hinder, Chris Cornell). They give David Cook's clutch of bombastic verse-chorus- verse rockers an impressive melodic sheen, one well suited to Cook's husky, expressive vocals."

Since Daughtry didn't win "American Idol" (he came in fourth place), Billboard declares David Cook to be "the lone rocker winner of 'Idol' to date" and says "Cook stands apart from cookie-cutter pop."

However, David Cook won't be nominated for four Grammys this year. He has just limited eligibility, as pointed out by our resident Grammy sage Darrin "DoubleD" Dortch.

"I hate to be cynical," Darrin says, "but David Cook and David Archuleta won't be anywhere near the Grammys next year — unless they buy a ticket. Their albums just came out this month so they aren't eligible. However, Cook's single, 'Lights On; and David Archuleta's single, 'Crush,' are both eligible and they have little chance of being nominated in the male pop vocal performance category. Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Michael Buble, Seal, Chris Brown, Kid Rock, Ne-Yo, Neil Diamond, Gavin DeGraw, James Taylor, Josh Groban, Paul McCartney, Lenny Kravitz, etc. will all get in before David Cook or David Archuleta."

Do you agree?

Absolutely. There is not a record released this year that has more demanding vocals than David Cook's new album. The difficulty is off the charts. The man has some serious pipes!

David Cook's new cd has some brilliant tracks on it. Permanent is a true masterpiece. David's beautiful voice emotes raw emotion against a stunnigly beautiful, yet simple musical arrangement. It is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard in a very long time. But then he turns around and rocks you to your core on Bar-ba-sol and Declaration. I must say that I feel there is something unique and special about him, sometimes bordering on genius. The fact that he wrote so many of these songs himself is quite impressive, especially considering his young age. He has a long term place in the music industry and I am certain his future holds nominations for him. His solid songwriting skills prove he is more than just a rocker. He is an artist in every sense of the word.

David Cook has an amazing voice - several songs on the album including Light On showcase it. I'd love to see him nominated for best male vocal or best new artist. If it doesn't happen this year due to timing, I foresee it happening next year!

David Cook might not be eligible this year but I am pretty sure he is going to dominate the Grammy's the following year. I like Daughtry but I think that Cook is in a different class. The vocals in that album are amazing, the lyrics are unique and the arrangements are extremely catchy. I know there are a lot of people who dislike all things American Idol (for valid reasons), but I would definitely advise listening to this guy. I think a lot of people would be pleasantly surprised.

I truly hope he is nominated for a grammy because David Cook is an amazing artist. If he doesn't get nominated this coming year it will be because of the choice of "Light On" as the first single. There are at least six or seven songs on the CD that are more marketable than Light On, in my opinion. Some of the songs that show off his beautiful vocals are Permanent, Come Back to Me, and Lie. I suspect that Declaration will be the second single released and it is also a winner. Heroes is catchy and I personally love Mr. Sensitive. He doesn't scream, but he does do justice to a power ballad.

hey uh... just for future references... the single is called "Light On" not "Lights On"

lol are you kidding? his voice is so unoriginal and went out of style with creed and the like. if he wins, it's a new low for the grammys, because he's a flash in the pan if that.

Cook has decent vocals, but tends to be pitchy and screamy, which can't be good for the voice long term.

I read that Light On was not submitted, or anything David Cook. So I'm guessing the answer is No, cause it's not possible.
