ANSWER: Frank Sinatra ("Man with the Golden Arm"). Two years after Ol' Blue Eyes won best supporting actor of 1953 for "From Here to Eternity," the superstar crooner proved his acting chops again by reaping his only other career nomination — this time in the lead acting race. He lost to Ernest Borgnine, star of best picture champ "Marty." The other nominees: Spencer Tracy ("Bad Day at Black Rock"), James Dean ("East of Eden") and James Cagney ("Love Me or Leave Me").
