Michael Musto: Oscar voters will gag on 'Milk,' hug a 'Slumdog'
The Oscars race — otherwise known as the Gay Super Bowl — "is going to be gayer" than ever this year, promises Village Voice wag Michael Musto. He knows the Oscars so well that he's comfortable making Red Buttons jokes (of course, you all know that he won best supporting actor of 1957 for "Sayonara") and keenly remembers the last time a big Hollywood gay movie like "Milk" was a top contender: "Brokeback Mountain" in 2005.
"Brokeback" got upset by "Crash" for best picture because of secret homophobia, Musto says. "When many voters got their DVD screener of 'Brokeback Mountain,' they didn't even want to look at it. They thought, 'Oh, that makes me uncomfortable' " he says. "Well, guess what? 'Milk' is about out gays, not closet cases like 'Brokeback.' It's really going to scare people!"
So forget about "Milk" winning the Oscar for best picture. What will it be instead? Musto has a strong prediction. Watch the video to learn more. Apologies for the segment's abrupt end. I suffered a few camera snafus the day that Michael and I shot several videos at his (relatively new) apartment in midtown Manhattan. Nice digs, Michael!
