Golden Globes winner Sally Hawkins to Meryl Streep: Yes, Meryl, I'm happy now!
"Happy-Go-Lucky" winner Sally Hawkins took to the Golden Globes stage, admittedly flummoxed as to what to say: "I will try and get through as much of this as my voice, nerves and knees will let me."
While she continued to fumble through the rest of her acceptance speech, Hawkins was always endearing and her honest humility appealing.
Poor Hawkins -- she's been underestimated throughout awards season. Early in the derby, most of our Buzzmeter pundits didn't include her in their five contenders for best actress at the Oscars, but she ploughed through the precursor awards, snatching up laurels from the New York and Los Angeles Film Critics. Now the Golden Globe.
Obviously, Hawkins shouldn't be underestimated anymore. Now we must wonder: can she actually, egads, win the Oscar? Considering the Golden Globes are seen as contenders' Oscar audition, she seems to have passed the test. She's really in the running.
By the way, Hawkins was asked backstage in the press room what occurred when loser Meryl Streep ("Mamma Mia!") stopped her en route to the podium, having a private word with her.
"She asked me, 'Are you happy now?'" Hawkins revealed. "'Yes, Meryl!'" she answered. Hawkins had never met Streep in the past.

Kudos to the both of them. They are both really talented actresses - their performances were brilliant and no one could perform better in their roles. I think Hawkins deserved the reward, she did a brilliant job. It appears that people wanted Streep to win through favouritism, or that they haven't even seen Happy-Go-Lucky which is biased. Hawkins is an amazing actress, after her performance in Fingersmith I just had to see more. She deserves the award, good for her.

I am so incredibly happy for Sally Hawkins! She is amazing, and deserved to be recognized for her brilliant performance.

I can understand the sense of disappointment that goes along with finding out your favorite actress didn't win an important award, but please don't dis Sally Hawkins just because she won over your favorite or because you've never heard of her. Until recently, I had never heard of her, either. But her performance in "Fingersmith" was absolutely fantastic; it has piqued my interest about her other roles. And just because she doesn't have the name recognition here in the US that Meryl Streep has doesn't mean Sally Hawkins is any less of an actress. She most definitely deserved to win!

Just to get my personal opinioin in here, I think some people are making this into a Meryl/Hawkins who is better battle. I think Meryl stopped and talked to Hawkins because Meryl understands what it is like to put out a huge amount of wonderful work and not get an award for it. She was acknowledging Hawkins and trying to say congratulations, you finally won! Very classy lady

Sally Hawkins' performance in Happy Go Lucky was utterly splendid. Sounds like Meryl's fans, and Meryl herself, are suffering a bit of green eyes. Meryl is so good that you should all know her time wil come.

Sally Hawkins is an amazing actress...she just hasn't had any exposure in the US. I'd suggest you check her out in both Fingersmith and tipping the Velvet

I watched the Golden Globes last night and cried and started beating the pillows in my living room when I found out. Whoever said Mamma Mia was a mediocre film... hmm, I disagree. Anyway, I hope she wins something next year, or an Oscar next month. Meryl I love you, and I think you are amazingly talented. Good job to Sally Hawkins and Kate Winslet. Although, Kate got one, so my couldn't Meryl get the other. I feel for you Meryl. Much love =D

Meryl Streep has two Oscars and 6 Golden Globes (the most of any actor/Actress in History). Meryl Streep is an incredibly talented actress and has been recognized as such.
have any of you watched Happy-Go-Lucky? Or, for that matter, Mamma Mia?
How can you comment that Meryl Streep deserves to win over Sally Hawkins in a film you haven't seen?
What disturbs me most about this entire discussion is the fact that the commenters are premising their support of Meryl Streep on her past body of work as opposed to the mediocre film she put out this year.
By that logic, KAtherine Hepburn should be banking the awards now. After all, she's a far more accomplished actress than Meryl Streep. Of course, she's dead now but we're judging by past performance right?

First, I’d like to congratulate this year’s Golden Globe nominees and winners, all of whom were well deserving of both the nomination and award. However, after reading many of the blogs and comments regarding the awards, I can clearly see that the authors of the more callous comments are not familiar with the history and mission of the HFPA and Golden Globe Award’s purpose. I believe perhaps it would serve entertainment audiences well to take time to research the history and mission of the award before commenting.
I congratulate the HFPA in adhering to their mission in this year’s Golden Globe Award selections. The following was taken directly from HFPA-Golden Globe Award history file www.goldenglobes.org :
Mission Statement
The mission of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) is:
To establish favorable relations and cultural ties between foreign countries and the United States of America by the dissemination of information concerning the American culture and traditions as depicted in motion pictures and television through news media in various foreign countries;
To recognize outstanding achievements by conferring annual Awards of Merit, (Golden Globe® Awards), serving as a constant incentive within the entertainment industry, both domestic and foreign, and to focus wide public attention upon the best in motion pictures and television;
To contribute to other nonprofit organizations connected with the entertainment industry and involved in educational, cultural, and humanitarian activities;
To promote interest in the study of the arts, including the development of talent in the entertainment field through scholarships given to major learning institutions.

Kate and Sally are poor actresses in comparison with Meryl Streep. It seems an ageist vote. Slumdog millionaire is appalling.
Maryl streep is a real actress.

Apparently the commenters who think Meryl should have won (again), have never SEEN Happy-Go-Lucky. To all of them: to quote Poppy, "It's so hard to be you" :-)

Meryl is our greatest actress and too taken for granted. She deserves the prizes she is so often nominated for. She is a gift to us and should be better appreciated!

You know what I believe Meryl Streep should have won, I have never heard of that other girl, and the other actresses were good but did not compare to Mrs.Streep. Common there are thousands of people who agree, and never call Meryl Streep a loser.

Meryl deserved two awards and they couldn't even give her one!
It is so barefacedly unfair!
