Golden Globes factoids on winners Wilkinson, Dern, Springsteen, Byrne and Paquin
• Tom Wilkinson won a Golden Globe to match the Emmy Award he won for this supporting role as Benjamin Franklin in "John Adams" last fall. He is also nominated this evening as lead actor in a telefilm or miniseries for playing a modern day political advisor, James Baker, in "Recount."
• Laura Dern has a long history with the Golden Globes, including being Miss Golden Globe back in 1982. However, despite one lead actress movie nod ("Rambling Rose," 1991) and two leading actress telefilm noms ("Afterburn" in 1992 and "The Baby Dance" in 1998), she was winless until tonight. Unlike fellow supporting winner Wilkinson, Dern did not win an Emmy Award for her work in "Recount." Though she was Emmy nom’d for playing real-life Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris, her Globe rival Eileen Atkins took that trophy for "Cranford." At those top TV kudos, Dern remains winless after four nods.
Laura Dern is not the first Miss Golden Globe to win one of the trophies. Melanie Griffith was Miss GG in 1975 and went on to win a GG as best actress in a movie comedy/musical for “Working Girl” in 1988.
Laura’s mother, Diane Ladd, has a GG for her supporting work in TV series “Alice” (1981) but her father, Bruce Dern, is winless after two nominations.
• Bruce Springsteen won a Golden Globe and then an Oscar 15 years ago for the song — "Streets of Philadelphia" — he composed for the film "Philadelphia." While Clint Eastwood has never been Oscar nom’d for his musical efforts, he was a Globe nominee for his scores for "Million Dollar Baby" (2004) and "Grace is Gone" (2007) and had a nod for the title song to "Grace Is Gone" as well. Tonight, he is also a score nominee for "Changeling."
• Gabriel Byrne lost the Emmy Award for best actor in a drama series to Bryan Cranston for “Breaking Bad.” Cranston was not nominated by the Globes. While Cranston had three Emmy nods for “Malcolm in the Middle,” he only had one Globe nod for that role.
• Anna Paquin lost her first Globe race back in 1993 when she was nominated for her supporting turn in the movie “The Piano.” The winner was Winona Ryder for “The Age of Innocence.” Paquin went on to beat Ryder for the Oscar a few weeks later. Last year, Paquin lost the catch-all TV supporting category for “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee” to Samantha Morton of “Longford.”

Actually Dern won the Best Actress in a TV Movie award for "Afterburn" in the 90s, which means this is her 2nd Golden Globe.
