'Slumdog Millionaire' and 'Milk' win WGA, of course

Read all of the details about who won the WGA Awards in the L.A. Times. Obviously, "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Milk" are the front-runners at the Oscars too, but there's a curious plot complication ahead in the category for original screenplay.

At the Academy Awards, "Wall-E" is nominated against "Milk." It was disqualified at the awards bestowed by the Writers Guild of America — animated films aren't eligible. No animated feature has ever won a screenplay Oscar, but lots have been nominated in recent years. It's a fairly new trend, perhaps suggesting growing support that may pay off with a big win someday soon. If any animated flick can do it, the adorable "Wall-E" seems like a serious possibility.

However, here's an interesting statistic. Over the last four years, the WGA Awards champs have agreed with the Oscar picks for both original and adapted screenplays.

If Milk wins the Oscar for original screenplay, Gus Van Sant can now brag that he has directed two screenplays that won. The last time was Good Will Hunting. Whenever a Gus Vant film is nominated, trust that the screenplay will win.
