ANSWER: Believe it or not, one showbiz award is now the biggest winner of another. Over the last few years the Academy Awards telecast has surpassed the Emmy record held by "Frasier" (37).

Beware: counting up the 42 Emmy wins reaped by the Oscarcast is tricky. You can't just do a simple search for "Academy Awards" at The Envelope's awards database , at IMDB.com (or even the TV academy's own bank. The Oscarcast was renamed many times through the years so you have to search for every conceivable variation of "Oscar," "Academy Award," etc. And, if I'm not mistaken, a few of the early wins may not be in any of those databanks. Remember, a lot of these lists — including big chunks of the academy's own database — are derived from my research while writing the first definitive history of the Emmys. I'm not sure everybody picked up everything. A few years ago when I conducted a thorough tally of Oscarcast noms and wins, there were lots of kooky gaps and holes, as I now vaguely recall.

Back in the 1970s, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" set this record with 29 wins and held it for many years, successfully staving off a challenge from "Cheers" (28) later. Someday they may all be surpassed by "Saturday Night Live," which currently has 23 Emmys and continues to win as long as it remains on the air (two last year).
