Can excitement over 'ER' series finale revive its Emmy hopes?
There's been so much hoopla over the series finale of "ER" on NBC that the show's awards prognosis may be resuscitated like, say, a heart patient in an Emmy emergency room.
"ER" holds the Emmy record for most nominations 122 and has won 22 Emmy Awards so far, including the trophy as best drama series of 1996. (It beat "Chicago Hope," "Law & Order," "NYPD Blue" and "The X Files").
Only eight TV series have won more Emmys: "Frasier" (37), "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" (29), "Cheers" (28), "Hill Street Blues" (26), "The West Wing" (26), "The Carol Burnett Show" (25), "Saturday Night Live" (24), "The Simpsons" (24). "All in the Family" earned 22 just like "ER."
However, "ER" hasn't been nominated for best drama since 2001. It was nommed seven times in its early days. Can it now rally?
And what about Noah Wyle? He reaped bids for best supporting actor five times between 1995 and 1999, but never won. Julianna Margulies is the only regular series star to claim an acting Emmy (best supporting actress, 1995). That means George Clooney, Anthony Edwards, Sherry Stringfield, Laura Innes, Maura Tierney, Eriq La Salle, Goran Visnjic, Parminder Nagra, John Stamos, Linda Gardellini, Scott Grimes and so many fine actors have gotten skunked by the Emmys for their work on the long-running hit TV classic. However, two guest stars won acting trophies: Sally Field and Ray Liotta.
