Update: Emmy race for best drama series

April 18, 2009 | 11:43 am

As we head into the last six weeks of the Emmy eligibility period, here's my latest rundown on who's ahead in the battle over best drama series. Remember: there will be six or seven nominees this year instead of the usual five and all will be chosen by a popular vote of the 13,000 members of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Judging panels won't be involved as they were the previous three Emmy years.

At this point, I think the seven with the best shot are "Damages," "Dexter," "House M.D.," "In Treatment," "Lost," "Mad Men" and "24." But our forums modeator Robert "Rob L" Licuria dares to disagree with me. See the predix at his site AwardsHeaven.net.

BIG LOVE all the way. Only the best show on television. Original, exciting, dramatic, and overall, the most well-acted show on. Everyone, from the lead actors, to the smaller characters are absolutely fabulous. The writing is insane!!! Love this show.

lost all the way! lost!

Guessing who the nominees will be for drama series is tough. Right now, Mad Men is the only lock. How the remaining contenders get in will probably have more to do with the networks' campaigning and industry politics than the actual quality of the shows. I think Lost should get in based on the fact it's ABC's best show. HBO deserves to have two series in, Big Love and In Treatment, but they'll be lucky to get one. I liked Dexter's third season, but I know a lot of people didn't. However, Showtime could get Dexter over the hump with a strong campaign. Same deal with Damages. It's second season wasn't embraced like the first was, but it could still ride on the coattails of last year's Emmy wins.

I believe House will be snubbed. This season has been by far it's weakest. Fox is going to focus more on 24. 24's season has been just "ok" so far, but I'm pretty sure that's about to change, and I mean big time, in the remaining episodes.
