Jenny McCarthy could be next Emmy winner for Oprah Winfrey

May 4, 2009 |  2:04 pm

Jenny McCarthy is the newest filly to join Oprah Winfrey's growing stable of talent. The one-time Playboy model has signed a multi-year deal with Harpo Productions. McCarthy has already transformed herself from blond bombshell to actress, author and advocate. Now, with backing from daytime's most successful diva, McCarthy is set to host her own talkfest.

With Winfrey set to launch her own cable net next year (a rebranded Discovery Health Channel), she needs new content. And McCarthy can deliver a fresh approach to the talk format. She is outspoken and does not shy away from expressing her opinion on controversial subjects such as the relationship between autism and vaccination. That Jenny McCarthy is dating Jim Carrey just adds to her marquee value.

The last time Winfrey produced a new talk show was in 2006 for TV chef Rachael Ray. With equal parts dishes and dishing, that hybrid won the new category of talk show (entertainment) at last year's Daytime Emmy Awards. In its first season, this gabfest had competed for both best talk show and best talk show host but lost both awards to Ellen DeGeneres.

DeGeneres has dominated the Daytime Emmy Awards since her self-titled show first competed in 2004. She has won a slew of awards for both hosting and producing her show, often at the expense of Phil McGraw. Another of Oprah Winfrey's finds, this tough-talking Texan has competed at the Emmys every year since 2003. However, he is quickly turning into the Susan Lucci of talkers as he has lost all four of his hosting bids and six consecutive show races.

Winfrey removed herself from the daytime Emmy race in 1998 after receiving the lifetime achievement award and took her show out of the running the following year. However, the technical and creative types at her talker still compete at the daytime Emmy Awards.

I may come back to finish this article later. I just wanted to point out a typo. It seems that you accidentally referred to Jenny as being talented. We know that is not true.
