Video: Talkin' 'Big Love' and Emmys with Bill Paxton

June 9, 2009 |  7:06 pm

Even though it continues to get rave reviews from TV critics, HBO's "Big Love" hasn't received much Emmy love. That's probably because it aired early during the eligibility periods covering its first two seasons. This year, season three debuted in January so it'll be fresher on voters' minds. It hasn't been totally out of mind, though. It's received a few tech nominations and a guest-acting bid for Ellen Burstyn. After its first season "Big Love" made the top-10 runoff of drama series and Bill Paxton made the top 15 for best lead actor before the lists of nominees were whittled down to five in each race. So it's on Emmy radar and this season it's received its best reviews yet. That may turn into big things at the Emmys.

"Big Love" and Paxton were nominated for best series and actor at the Golden Globes in 2007 and 2008.

The problem is that Paxton is not outstanding enough to get a nod, especially up against Hamm, Hall, Cranston, etc. And the series is just not in the top 5 best on TV (however great it may be). It's best shot has always been for its stellar troupe of actresses. Sadly, those ladies always seem to cancel each other out. I think they have 4 actresses vying in the supporting race this year? Tripplehorn has the best shot as the sole Best Actress contender but really when your category includes Sally Field, Holly Hunter, and Glenn Close....best stay home on the couch and enjoy the show.
