Emmy pundits' slugfest over best comedy series

July 12, 2009 | 11:33 am

When Robert "Rob L" Licuria, Chris "Boomer" Beachum and I came out swinging with our predictions in the Emmy race for best comedy serious, poor Boomer really took a beating over his forecast that "Flight of the Conchords" will soar. Ah, well. I also roughed up Rob a bit for his daredevil calls backing "Family Guy" and "The Big Bang Theory." Meantime, all three of us agreed that past winners "30 Rock" and "The Office" and repeat nominees "Entourage" and "Two and a Half Men" will return easily this Thursday morning when bids are unveiled. But what other two shows will land in this category?

Tom, your bias is undoubtedly clouding your judgement. Will 'Flight of the Conchords' be nominated? Probably not, but it is not too far off. Last year, it made the top ten and picked up writing and directing nominations. And you did not put it in your "inside track" top twenty. How do 'Better Off Ted', 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia', 'Monk', 'My Name Is Earl' and 'New Adventures of Old Christine' stand better chances?

Also, it was not cancelled. The writers chose to end it because they could not come up with any more songs. After the first season, they said that the next would probably be the last for this reason.
