Edward Zwick elected to Oscars' board of governors
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences still hasn't elected a new president of its board of governors, but it just made some other leadership progress by deciding who'll represent its members in the directors' branch.
Edward Zwick ("Blood Diamond," "Glory") will join Martha Coolidge ("Material Girls," "Lost in Yonkers") and Curtis Hanson("L.A. Confidential," "Wonder Boys") as representatives of the academy's helmers on the board.
The move follows' Zwick's defeat of Gil Cates ("I Never Sang for My Father," "Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams") in an unprecedented run-off election.
Zwick's victory is extraordinary considering Cates seemed to have a cozy relationship with academy members, having produced many Oscar telecasts. By comparison, Zwick has had a frustrating history with the Oscars.
Though he won an Academy Award as a co-producer of best picture champ "Shakespeare in Love" (1998) and was nominated in the best-pic category as a producer of "Traffic" (2000), he's never reaped a bid for directing or writing despite strenuous efforts and vigorous campaigns for "The Last Samurai," "Defiance" and other flicks.
Further info about the status of the academy's board of directors is in the academy's press release.
