Daytime Emmy diva smackdown: Who'll win supporting actress?
Wow. Talk about opposite opinions! When sizing up the Daytime Emmy race for supporting actress, our forums poster Christian "Prettygoodyear" Mero ranked Julie Pinson ("As the World Turns") first, while our forums moderator Matthew "Boidiva02" Cormier ranked her last! Instead, Boidiva02 believes Bree Williamson ("One Life to Live") is out front.
Both of our gurus placed Tamara Braun ("One Life to Live") in second place.
But, wait — let's get back to the odd Williamson-Pinson split. These pundit opinions are based upon careful evaluation of the sample video ("reels" or "tapes," they're sometimes called) that are viewed by Emmys judges. Boidiva02 pooh-poohs Pinson's entry as "so ordinary, so average that I don't know what prompted her to consider this an Emmy-worthy reel." However, Prettygoodyear cheers her performance in the video as "mature, well rounded" and "multilayered."
First, let's consider Boidiva02's assessment of this heated diva divide. SUPPORTING ACTRESS: BOIDIVA02'S PREDIX
(Ranked in likelihood of winning)
1. Bree Williamson, "One Life to Live"
2. Tamara Braun, "Days of Our Lives"
3. Alicia Minshew, "All My Children"
4. Melissa Claire Egan, "All My Children"
5. Julie Pinson, "As the World Turns"
BOIDIVA02'S COMMENTARY: This is one of the least competitive categories this year, with only two performances I believe even stand a chance of winning.
Bree Williamson of "One Life to Live" presents a solid, powerful arch that takes place at her husband's funeral after Nash has died. It's also the aftermath of the lies told by sister Natalie and pretend uncle Jarrod, which resulted in Dorian's takeover of Buchanan Enterprises and in Nash and Jarrod's fight that ended with Nash falling over the balcony and crashing through the skylight. At first Jessica is just sad and grieving Nash, she gets up to make a speech, and then Natalie and Jarrod show up at the funeral and Jessica unleashes her fury upon them, screaming at them, calling them scum and trash and wishing they were dead instead of Nash.
She maintains a hysterical state the entire funeral, which comprises over half the reel. After the funeral, Jessica goes home and remembers many happy memories of Nash while looking over photographs and packing up their home, which they have now lost. The scene ends with Jessica falling asleep just moments before she wakes up as alter Tess.
Tamara Braun's tape features Ava, holding hostage Patch, Kayla, Bo and Hope and grieving that Patch left her for Kayla. Her psychotic rampage continues when she announces she is going to keep them hostage until Kayla gives birth and then will kill Kayla and take her unborn baby from her. Braun maintains a nice balance between psychotic and vulnerable. Despite what she's doing you feel her anguish and her hurt over losing the man she loved. It's the only tape that can match Williamson's reel, but at only 11 minutes of screen time, can it really?
Alicia Minshew is ranked third only because she has the longest tape at 19 minutes, but it doesn't help her much as her tape is such a let-down. Over one third of the tape are flashbacks from previous episodes, including a scene in which Kendall visits Erica in prison. The rest of the tape is Kendall telling Zack she cheated on him. The announcement's impact is ruined because Zack confesses he already knows this. Thorsten Kay's flat performance as Zack hurts the tape as he gives Minshew nothing to work off of and she mostly delivers one long, flat monologue without expressing any true emotion.
Melissa Claire Egan's reel had potential as Annie admits to months of lies and schemes against Ryan, then turns all psycho when the ghost of her dead brother taunts her. The first half of her reel with Ryan is one long, flat, emotionless speech, which is hard to watch and boring. She livens up when Billy J. Miller as Richie comes on screen and taunts Annie, which prompts her to admit she killed him and declare he won't hurt her anymore. But by the time this happens, it's too late, the tape is over before she can build any real momentum.
Julie Pinson's tape is so ordinary, so average that I don't know what prompted her to consider this an Emmy-worthy reel. She starts off confronting boyfriend Jack about her knowledge that he slept with ex-wife Carly, which presents Janet as vulnerable and sympathetic. The next scene where Janet confronts Carly does little to build any cohesive character as you begin to sympathize more with Carly than with Janet as is probably intended. Once Janet leaves Carly's house, we get an unrelated scene in which Janet is robbed.
At the end of the day Williamson and Braun have the only competitive tapes, and it's unlikely someone else can win.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS: PRETTYGOODYEAR'S PREDIX
(Ranked in likelihood of winning)
1. Julie Pinson, "As the World Turns"
2. Tamara Braun, "Days of Our Lives"
3. Bree Williamson, "One Life to Live"
4. Melissa Clair Egan, "All My Children"
5. Alicia Minshew, "All My Children"
PRETTYGOODYEAR'S COMMENTARY: If viewers really watch these reels and get past the first two boring "this is the episode she chose?" minutes of Julie's reel, I feel she will win this quite easily. By far the most mature, well-rounded performance. She gets the idea of subtext, acting with your eyes. It was multilayered.
But Tamara's reel was so much fun to watch, and her first few minutes were so good. This reel made me want to watch "Days" and see what happened next. It was standard soap-opera psycho stuff, though, not that deep. It will not surprise me if she wins, especially since she has worked on many shows and can get votes easier.
Bree: I honestly think that the nonstop one-note hysterics are going to turn judges off, and I think they will get bored. The reel I thought would be No. 1 is not even close.
Melissa and Alicia: Wow. Terrible reels.

I would tend to agree with Prettygoodyear. I think that Julie's performance had many layers in her reel.
Also it doesn't really matter, but Jack and Carly didn't actually sleep together.
