Who'll nab Grammy bids for best album: Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Black Eyed Peas, U2 or Green Day?

November 24, 2009 |  6:44 am

Our forums moderator David "Guru" Schnelwar and I have already dished who we think will score bids for best record of the year when Grammy nominations are unveiled on Dec. 2. Below, we duke it out over best album and add the views of our other forums moderator Darrin "DoubleD" Dortch. See his text write-up below; he'll join us in the future for video slugfests. We all agree that top contenders for this Grammy trophy include Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas, Green Day, Kanye West, Lady GagaTaylor Swift, U2 and Whitney Houston.

DOUBLED'S COMMENTARY: This category is ridiculously weak this year. ANYONE could get a nomination. Swift is in for obvious reasons and I think the country voting bloc will get George Strait, a well-respected veteran, a nod here as well. Maxwell will get the R&B vote over Beyonce and Whitney Houston since his album has been so well received. Past nominees/winners Green Day and U2 are likely, but I wouldn't be surprised if Lady Gaga or even the BEPs replaced them. Even an under-the-radar act like Yeah Yeah Yeahs, whose album is critically acclaimed, could surprise with a nod here.

to Cisco: MILLI VANILLI weren't laughing-stock. It was very qualitative music. Scandal can't cross out merits of real musicians.

I hope Lady Gaga wins for at least "Pokerface". She brings a fresh new style to the music industry and the usual humdrum. Go Gaga!

This is a very interesting chat. I think the 5 nominees for album of the year this year will be Taylor Swift "Fearless", U2 "No Line On The Horizon", Lady GaGa "The Fame", Maxwell "BlackSummers Night", and the last nomination to either Green Day "21st Century Breakdown" or Kanye West "808's and Heartbreak".
"Fearless":
Taylor Swift will be representing the country field at the Grammys no doubt. I think having the biggest selling album of the year though is going to be what makes her lose some votes (thank God). If you look recently at Mariah Carey, Lil Wayne, or Coldplay, they all had one of the top two selling albums of their respected year and they lost album of the year. Even though the album is very boring, childish, and just bland i still expect her to be a front-runner.
"No Line On The Horizon":
U2, in my opinion, is one of the most overrated bands of this decade. Yet, they could make an album of themselves vomiting and the Grammys would still nominate it for album of the year. I think their win 4 years ago will be what hinders them from absolutely dominating this category.
"The Fame":
Lady GaGa will (hopefully) be the Grammy golden girl this year. I think she is so fresh and unique. I think this nomination though (like Green Day or Kanye West) will just be a nomination filler and not intended to be taken seriously. I think shes too mainstream for the Grammys to give her the top honors. Though i expect her to dominate the pop and dance fields and highly possible to win record of the year. Album of the year will be left to Taylor Swift or U2.
"BlackSummers Nights":
I have never heard of Maxwell or any of his music. I have heard many good things about him though and if he dosent get the nomination it will go to Beyonce or Whitney Houston.
"808's and Heartbreaks or 21st Century Breakdown":
Kanye West will probally be the last remaining nomination. The Grammys know it will be ratings gold if they put West and Swift in the same category. Not to mention every one of his albums have been nominated for album of the year. Green Day will probally have their chances squashed by U2. The grammy will leave U2 and Green Day to duke it out in the rock fields.

Man, Max gets no respect.

If Whitney or Beyonce wins over Maxwell it would be a shame.

Maxwell produced a very polished R&B album and it has been well received by both the critics and the public. "Pretty Wings" was #1 on the R&B Urban charts for 13 weeks. This just might be his year after years of being the bridesmaid but never the bride.

I don't care how many standing ovations Whitney gets, it will be for what was not what is. Whitney's voice is gone and her fans are deluding themselves. It's a shame but it is the truth. SMH

This is a pretty good analysis. I think U2 will be favored over Green Day, although neither were home runs, so this could be the first year in a long time that no rock album is on the list (gasp). I really think Beyonce will get it. This has been her strongest album yet, it produced a lot of hits, and she's well liked. The album is no less deserving than, for example, Mariah Carey's 2005 album or Gwen Stefani's 2004 disc, both of which were nominated. By the way, Whitney Houston's album was called "I Look to You," not "I Told You So" (but what a catty name that would have been!).

just stumbled upon this, interesting chat defiantly, hopefully you guys will do more on the other big categories.

I would prefer to see performances by the likes of the Yeahs, Yeahs, Yeahs, U2, Green Day, Lady Ga-Ga (girl can shatter glass like no other), Bruce, Bob Dylan, Kings of Leon, Emenim, and Rihanna over Whitney (who would be expected to sing a bombastic ballad--yyyyaaawwwnn!). Thank goodness the Grammys always have better performers than the AMAs. Great performers are what makes me watch the Grammys every year and Whitney is a nice singer with great pipes but really a bland performer. Britney's lip-synching is more exciting--well--not really--girl has no talent whatsoever...

The International Queen of Comebacks Whitney Houston will get Album of the Year or Song of the Year. Her performance on the AMAs brought tears to everyone's eyes. That is what good well-written and produced music is suppose to do to you and no one can shake the core of a person like Whitney Houston can. She is an ultimate legend and many people will tune in just to see her performance just like they did for the AMAs. Whitney is a money maker and ratings booster!!!

A nod to the BEPs and/or TSwift will be very cringe-inducing, since both works are best-sellers but very bland and mediocre. U2, Green Day are a sure bet. Would love to see Mr. Dylan up for the big prize again after so many years of injustice from NARAS. There will be no nod for Mr. West after his MTV fiasco. Ms. Whitney's comeback was not the big bang it was expected to be...more of a whimper...A nod to the Yeahs, Yeahs, Yeahs would be just grand or even to Bruce Springsteen. NARAS will have to be ga-ga over Ms. GaGa -- rarely does the Grammys give a nod to dance-oriented music. Maxwell will get a nod for a fine, polished R&B sound on par with Stevie Wonder. A Miley Cyrus nomination would give NARAS a great tongue lashing from the public and fellow music industry types --it would be seen as a laughingstock since Milli Vanilli--wouldn't want that to happen, would we?

I agree Whitney and some of the others are in. Grammy voters do not care about sales just ask Mariah Carey. Taylor Swift had better pray she can get atleast one nod. The girl vocals are bad sorry just being real!

Though Whitney has won several Grammys in the past, it's been awhile for her, and she's in the "if she hadn't straightened herself out, she could have easily been Michael Jackson" category; so I suspect she may fit Tom's "distinguished veteran" bill this year. (That, and I think what Guru said about D'Angelo may apply to Maxwell; he has the critics, but I'm not sure he'll make the top 20 on the membership ballots to get to the nominating committee.) As I've said before, the nominating committee is Whitney's biggest hurdle; if she can get past them for a nomination, she will win.

Other than that, I generally agree with Tom. Of course Taylor & Gaga are in, 'nuff said. Some might not think the BEPs were good enough, but "The E.N.D." proved they're not just a rap group; I think the voters will notice that. The weakest choice IMO is Green Day; they didn't get the sales this time, but the voters certainly know them from the "American Idiot" era so there's a good chance they'll look past that. But if they go for U2 or even The Boss instead, they may be on the sidelines.

Whitney Houston is deft in for album of the year and Record of the year. Did you see the standing ovation at the AMA's. Are you guys on crack! or Biased? She has been making appearances everywhere and will be singing twice on Dancing with the stars tonight. I am shocked at you Tom.
