Inside track: Golden Globes' race for best drama actress

December 6, 2009 |  1:01 pm

Precious Gabourey Sidibe Carey Mulligan An Education

At the Golden Globes, Gabourey "Gabby" Sidibe may finally see her "Precious" dream realized – to be fawned over by frenzied paparazzi in Hollywood. But, like in "Precious," she also may get her heart crushed, this time in the fierce diva smackdown over best drama actress. Globers love to crown ingenues, but often they prefer the chic, sexy kind – like Carey Mulligan ("An Education"). This race is too close to call.

Actually I thought Precious was actually quite a flawed movie but Sidibe gave a performance that was an 'experience' and it spoke to many people including myself. Mulligan performance though good was nothing that has not been seen in countless other transition movies. Sidibe's performance for me is not even the performance of the year, I can think of about 6 other performances that top hers but Mulligan is this years new beautiful thing and I am sorry, what hype there has been has been mainly from male and other middle class critics. Seriously C'mon Hepburn comparisions !?!!?! If Mulligan wins the GG or the Oscar, then Sidibe, who is deemed to be Mulligan's main rival has been robbed.

Carey has been receiving RAVES from male and female critics, she gave a great performance. PERIOD.

Thats what I cant stand from Precious fans, you need to put down other performances and opnions to make your better. I have no problem in saying that Sidibe gave a fantastic performance. But to say that it was the absolute best AND no other actress should befighting for awards is ridiculous.

As I said, get over yourself, Carey deserves all the praise she is getting.

If Carey Wins it is because she is a male film critic's wet dream. Sidibe's performance was a emotional powerhouse, when she first came of screen we were repulsed but then we go on this journey with a child.

Mulligan's performance was cute, a girl realising that really she still has much growing up to do.

Even Streep's performance had more emotional resonance and that was purely comedic role.

Mulligan will grow as an actress but the best dramatic performance of the year....I don't think so.

So Carey may win because she is young and pretty? GET OVER YOURSELF, how about because she gave a freaking great performance and some critics believe she was better than Sidibe??????????

Precious fan boys truly believe that this overrated film is the second coming.

the producers of "london river" sent out screeners to every member of the hfpa, and blethyn's won this category before. from what ive heard, the movie's also likely to get nominated in their foreign language film category. she's undoubtedly a contender here.

Not meaning to question any judgment here, but since when was Brenda Blethyn a frontrunner here? She has no buzz at all, and the film doesn't even have a distributor...
