Razzie Award nominations: Can Sandra Bullock win worst AND best actress?

February 1, 2010 |  5:30 am
Razzie nominees Sandra Bullock awards news

"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and "Land of the Lost" are tied for the most Razzie Award nominations, scoring seven chances each to take gold paint-sprayed statuettes hailing the worst films of 2009.

Also noteworthy: two of this year's Oscar players could also end up as Razzie stars when trophies are doled out one night before the Academy Awards gala. Oscar ceremony co-host Steve Martin is nominated for worst actor in "Pink Panther 2." No other actor has ever been up for a Razzie the same year he or she emceed the Academy Awards, although Martin's co-host on March 7, Alec Baldwin, was nominated for a Razzie in 2003 (worst supporting actor, "Cat in the Hat").

Sandra Bullock is considered an Oscar best actress front-runner for "The Blind Side," but she's also nominated for 2009's worst actress for "All About Steve." If Bullock claims both trophies, she'll be the first star ever to pull off the dual win in the same year. Others have done so in nonacting categories. In 1992, Alan Menken won two Oscars for composing the music in "Aladdin" and a Razzie for a tune in "Newsies." In 1997, Brian Helgeland reaped an Oscar for writing "L.A. Confidential" screenplay and a Razzie for penning "The Postman."

Two stars have been nominated for an Oscar and a Razzie in the same year for the same role, but they lost: James Coco ("Only When I Laugh") and Amy Irving ("Yentl"). Halle Berry famously bagged a Razzie soon after her Oscar, but three years separated her wins for "Catwoman" (2004) and "Monster's Ball" (2001).

John Wilson, Razzie president and founder, tells Gold Derby that "Transformers 2" creator Michael Bay is overdue for Razzie glory after a past worst-picture loss for "Armageddon" (1998) and two defeats for worst director: "Armageddon" and "Pearl Harbor" (2001). "Bay is totally talent-free and untouched by the muse," Wilson says with a sigh.

Wilson says that 2009 was such a banner year for bad movies that the Razzies considered expanding their worst-picture list to 10 nominees like the Oscars' best-picture list, "but then I realized that our membership is only one-tenth of the academy, and it would have no meaning. It would be just like the Golden Globes where a movie can win with only 17 votes."

If the Razzies had expanded its top category, "Twilight: New Moon" would've been nominated for worst picture since it came in sixth place in the voting, so alas, it got snubbed.

" 'Twilight: New Moon' just wasn't bad enough," Wilson adds, noting that its star Taylor Lautner also barely missed out receiving a nomination for worst supporting actor. Nonetheless, he was cited along with "Twilight" costars in the category for worst screen couple as "Kristin Stewart and either Robert Pattinson or Taylor Whatz-His-Fang." Pattinson is nominated for worst supporting actor, and "New Moon" is listed in the race for worst screenplay.

Wilson is surprised at a few omissions from the performance lists. "Gerard Butler had a banner bad year with 'Gamer,' 'The Ugly Truth' and 'Law Abiding Citizen,' and Nicolas Cage was terrible in 'Knowing,'" he says. "In any other year they would've been nominated."

It's the Razzies' 30th anniversary year, so it's time to bestow prizes for worst filmmaking of the decade. They'll be doled out with 2009's trophies at Hollywood's Barnsdall Gallery Theatre at 7:30 p.m. March 6.

i detest all these Obamaniac politically correct movies lately such as BLIND SIDE or the PRINCESS FROG. Shame to Bullock and Disney for doing this,

they should've nominated lautner more.

Logic dictates that Megan Fox will win Razzie.

I don't know what movie to say is the worst of the worst movies of 2009, from the Razzie Nominations for 2010. Almost all of them are awful. I like the movie new moon, how come they are included in the worst of worst. . The same with worst performances – all are equally awful. If Sandra Bullock wins both Best Actress at the Oscars and Worst Actress at the Razzies, it will be the first time Best and Worst will have been won on the same night. (Halle Berry thus far won Best and Worst actress in the same year, for Catwoman and Monsters' Ball.) The awards themselves are all assembled for less than a payday loans' worth – as they are spray painted and cost about $5 to make.

People, there's no need to defend or apologize for Bullock, Pattinson, Lautner, Martin, and the rest. Sure, some of them have had some good performances or show signs of becoming greater. However, I think it's best to take off the fan boy goggles and realize that if you are delivering a bad performance in a bad movie then you deserve what you get.

You are right "... Sandra Bullock is not THAT bad ..." but she is definitively BAD!! How come could she ever win for best actress??

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson/Taylor Lautner deserve the Razzie for worst on-screen couple. She also deserves it for worst actress in everything she's been in. New Moon deserves to be nominated for worst movie too. Billy Ray Cyrus should win for his portrayal of a dad. I'm proud to say I have not watched any of the movies on the "Worst of the Decade" list.

I don't think Sandra Bullock is that bad, especially if she was compared to Miley or that New Moon statue K-Stew.

I'm surprised New Moon didn't get all nominations, the Razzies belong to it! And if Razzie has Worst Sound Editing/Mixing, New Moon will definitely 'win' it! The audio is so disturbing, and I hate that they remixing Muse's I Belong to You!

I still wonder why I watched that movie. Is it still deserve to be called movie?

Can I just remember something? The same year Baldwin was nominated for worst actor with "The cat on the hat", he also god an Oscar nomination with "The cooler" (both of them as supporting).
My opinion is going to be conditioned to the fact that I am big fan of hers, but I think Bullock was not THAT bad and the movie didn't deserve so much punishment. Sure it's not the ultimate comedy, but I think that many reviwers both a/wanted to write terrible things about her and b/didn't catch the movie (we weren't supposed to like Horowitz, she was no a stalker, and her histrionics were inherently to the character).

I kinda agree with others who are upset at Avatar getting snubbed for worst screenplay. South Park got it right when they said it was "Dances With Smurfs". Great action but just facepalming story.

Also I think the Jonas Bros nominations kind of go without saying...

I don't agree with Megan Fox in Jennifer's Body. She was okay there.

Just wanted to opine on opinions saying Pattinson didn't deserve to be a Razza for NM...

I don't know if his work on NM was worse than supporting actors in other films, but I think we have to admit that the level of work he did in Twilight, a movie and director that worked well for him, was leagues better than what he did in New Moon. The same can be said for Kristen Stewart. In fact, most of the core characters of the Twilight franchise, except for Lautner, did not deliver the level of acting they did in Twilight.

Pattinson probably doesn't have the luxury at this point in his career to bail on an installation of a franchise just because he has difficulties with a new director or whatever. So he may have felt stuck in the role, which is a bad place to start, I would imagine, for any actor when they start filming a new film.

And then when you take into consideration the horrendous makeup and wardrobe the cast had to wear in New Moon--I have a good deal of compassion for Pattinson if for no other reason than the crack-den-vampire makeup he (and the rest of the cast) had to wear. They so emphasized his supraorbital ridge that, combined with the makeup, he looked like Frankenstein. And the EYEBROWS! I am convinced the eyebrows they pasted on him had Satanic powers because once you looked at them, you could not look away, mostly because of fear they would start moving. They looked like two fuzzy caterpillers had been glued to his eyebrows.

Still, I was disappointed in the marked difference in the performances of both Pattinson and Stewart. But that pales when compared to the generalized screwedupedness of the movie.

1. I loathed New Moon, but I thought, out of all of the young cast, Taylor Lautner brought the most to his role.

2. I wonder if many of these categories could be lumped into one category entitled "Actor Who Doesn't Yet Know How to Choose Roles to Take On"? Many of these actors are brilliant in other roles, but the Razzi role they chose to play just was not a good fit. Sandra Bullock and Kristen Stewart come to mind.

3. Please add a category for worst costume and design. I know New Moon would have taken #1 on that one.

4. How about a category of "Film That Least Deserves the Hype It's Received." I think "Up In The Air" would win that one without much of a struggle.

The Razzies as so much more fun than the Oscars.

The nomination of Taylor Lautner as a part of worst screen couple is unfair. Robert Pattison and Kristen Stewart should get worst on and off-screen couple.

I'm not sure what The Pink Panther 2 is doing on here, it happens to be one of my favorite movies of last year! The movie had a good script, and cast, so I don't think it needs to be on here! They should really think about putting Richard Dreyfus on here for his HORRIBLE performance in "My Life In Ruins"

Avatar should be the worst sceeenplay for sure. It's almost like if the inhabitants of Pandora were Negros from Africa (or negro americans - they have some in that land too) and the white people were, well, white. Then they go to that Pandora place (it's not a real place. Africa is real and there are diamonds here.), and then the white people try to kill the Pandoreans and they loose. Well, we all know that's not the way things go, because the Negros lost, in fact everybody lost against the white man because they are superior in firepower and intelligence, especially the males, and we should be afraid of the white people so they won't hurt us. If the people of Pandora would have listened to the white man, they would have not suffered so much. It's a movie guys! Movies become real all the time!

You spelled like 8 names in wrong on your list.
Razzie for carelessness.

Sandra can win best actress, because ''The Blind Side'' is fantastic!

I kind of liked Land of the Lost. The Pink Panther 1 was terrible I can't believe they were dumb enough to make a sequal. Steve Martin should leave acting permanently.

" Can Sandra Bullock win worst AND best actress?"

ask Eddie Murphy.

Agreed - Avatar should have been nominated for Worst Screenplay.
On the other hand the Golden Globes thought it was the Best Film of the Year.
Maybe they just don't consider the screenplay part of the film....

It's funny to see people commenting they're suprised about Pattinson. What the heck has the kid done so far that makes you think he's not that bad or even a good actor?
please! give me a break.

Where is Justin Timberlake for Open Road? Why Shia was not nominated for Transformers as the Worst Actor? Why Chaning Tatum was snubed? They really should make their list to 6-7 names. There so many bad works. An no one cares about Land of the lost. On their places could be so many more famous overrated celebrities.

And big cheers for Megan Fox, Miley Cyrus, Beyonce and Robert Pattinson. And they didn’t nominate his "nemesis" Jacob :) Now can you believe this? The "ugly" one has better movie projects, more money and has by miles the better career prospects in Hollywood. While Pattinson will always be Edward and will probably vanish after the last movie of saga will hit the screens.

Where's Nicholas Cage in the Worst of the Decade list? Oh, I get it... he must be up for a Lifetime Achievement Award. I'll cast my vote now for him.
