Many people seem to take these awards way too seriously. If Meryl Streep wins, it will be because almost every performance she gives is good and an indication of highly professional acting. She captures the Julia Child character so eloquently, as she did with the performance in "Doubt". Sandra Bullock is finally showing that she is a fine actress in "The Blind Side" like she did in "Crash" when she broke out as a serious dramatic actress (although I am not a fan of "Crash", she joined with Matt Dillon and Thandie Newton to make an otherwise confusing movie seem authentic. Helen Mirren is a polished pro who's great performance in a dull movie could easily win an award if the other competitors weren't more worthy (or in better films). Gabby Sidibe and Carey Mulligan are already winners by being in a league with these other polished pro's. With that said, here are my Academy Award predicitons:
Best Picture - "Avatar" (with 10 nominees-special/original)
Best Director - Bigelow, "The Hurt Locker"*
Best Actor - Bridges, "Crazy Heart"
Best Actress - Bullock, "The Blind Side"
Best Sup. Actor - Waltz, "Inglorius Bastards"
Best Sup. Actress - Mo'Nique, "Precious"
Best Orig. Screenplay - "Inglorius Bastards"**
Best Adapted Screenplay - "Up in the Air"
* Bigelow is predicted as Reitman/Tarantino could split votes
** If "Inglorius Bastards" loses, "Up" may take it

If you go back and watch a clip of Sandra winning, watch the box Meryl is in when Sandra's name is announced. She gets excited and claps. A LOT of the people (actors) in the audience stood and applauded. She was selected by a majority of the ENTIRE membership of SAG. I'd say she's well deserving and that opinions, mine included, are predominately knee-jerk reactions to things not going how you may have wished.

I'd still go with Meryl for the win...Sandra Bullock is a mediocre performance in a mediocre movie. But if Oscar wants to surprise and really go out in left field then the win belongs to one of the following performances:
Emily Blunt in Young Victoria
The actress in Bright Star
The actress in Coco Before Chanel
or even the actress in The Maid
Gabourey was fine in Precious but not towering like Mo'Nique.
Carey Mulligan was fine but kinda comes off like Julie Christie in "Darling"
Helen Mirren could pull the win because she pulls in a fine performance as wife of Tolstoy's....so don't be suprise if she prevails if the Academy just got tired of having to choose between Meryl and Sandra...But Meryl deserves another win for her life-long career. Besides Meryl is now truly one of the greats like Bette Davis and Katherine Hepburn (even though she gave a mediocre performance in "On Golden Pond" or was she just playing herself?).

Sally - you must be out of your mind. An Oscar for Streep in Doubt? Really? And you must not have a brain or a heart if Gabourey Sidibe's nuanced, subtle work didn't move you. That's what acting is - raw and honest. Sidibe truly inhabited the role. And Mulligan was wonderful too. If you are looking for a flashy performance, I can understand how Bullock's Oscar-desparate performance might please. It was loud, obvious, and boring. Mo'Nique certainly has the flashier, attention-grabbing role in 'Precious,' but her shattering performance doesn't detract from Sidibe's lovely portrayal of the title character. Remember she was in about every single frame of the movie - she carried the film and deserves much more praise than she is getting.

The award should go to Sidibe or (most likely) Streep. Bullock's one-dimensional performance (albeit fairly convincing) as a determined Southern woman was fine for the Lifetime movie that was 'The Blind Side,' but it is no match for the layered work of the other actresses in her category. I understand she is well-liked, but her popularity as a person should not determine whether or not she gets an prestigious award. I'm hoping 'All About Steve' will ruin her chances. I just don't understand why, all of a sudden, her performance is attracting this kind of praise. It certainly didn't when the movie came out.

I have better things in my life to "hate". I do not "hate" Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock. We're just doing what everyone else is doing (on a blog that specifically CRITIQUES and prognosticates the politics of MOVIE AWARDS), including yourself. We have a difference of opinion on those critiques and prognostications. Nice try reaching for something to knock us down by. You only made yourself look dumb. (And btw, I have watched Lifetime movies in the past and Erin Brockovich. I see no difference other than the film grade was better and Albert Finney)

I always enjoy the people who feel the need to hate on the mainstream actresses (in particular ACTRESSES not the actor) because they have to direct their hate at something in their life. Some of you need to go and watch the Lifetime movies out there they are nothing like Erin Brockovich.

Yeah, Julia Roberts deserved it for her Lifetime television movie "Erin Brockovich", just like Sandra deserves it for HER Lifetime one. Sorry Ellen Burstyn, guess "Requiem For a Dream" wasn't good enough.

Wow, Sandra must be in Cloud 9. This is a big joke. Streep vs. Bullock? It's a great insult to the great Meryl! I swear.

I loved Meryl Streep in Doubt and she should have won the Oscar for that -- not for Julie and Julia -- and if Carey Mulligan wins I will just be so puzzled because there is nothing in the performance that even says Oscar. Gabide had one key scene but I didn't feel anything. It's really monique's role that blows you away. So Sandra Bullock all the way. If reese witherspoon can win every award for walk the line for what is a nothing performance, certainly -- Sandra's brass, fiery role in the blind side can win her won too.

sandra bullock is not at all like julia roberts. sandra at least has a little humility and julia thinks its all about her. and the other nominee in best actress in comedy was courtney cox in cougartown, not samantha who actress applegate.
Posted by: gayle | January 21, 2010 at 06:42 AM
Oh, and Julia Roberts TOTALLY deserved that Oscar. She just did.
Posted by: Zeke | January 20, 2010 at 10:32 PM
Michael, I think we all get what you're saying, but EVERY YEAR someone says Meryl will have several more opportunities to win. That she'll get her third (and possibly more) SOME DAY. Well, why not now? Every other time lately, a really worthy and even overdue competitor was nominated - think Mirren or Winslet. If you think Bullock is overdue for an actual win (the 'paid her dues' argument), you can justify anyone beating her in the future.

"The Blind Side" wasn't a fantastically made movie, although it did entertain and was a great story. However, I must disagree with the assertion that "just about any actress could've played that role." The character Bullock played could have easily come across as cold and bitchy. That's the genius of the performance - that she didn't come off that way. I'd love to see Bullock win. That said, Meryl Streep is the finest actor walking the planet and the fact that she hasn't won an Oscar in over 25 years is ridiculous. That said, I don't think "Julie & Julia" will win her an Oscar. Should she win this year, it'll be a combined award, in the minds of voters, for the past 2 decades of work.
Posted by: Zeke | January 20, 2010 at 10:31 PM
Sandra Bullock? Sigh. It's like Julia Roberts all over again.
Posted by: Jess | January 20, 2010 at 08:47 PM
"The Blind Side" was a Lifetime move of the week at best, and just about any actress could have played that role. Besides, Sandra's resume is abysmal and she could win the Razzie for "All About Steve", how anyone thinks she is deserving of the Oscar over Meryl is absurd.

It would be so nice to see Meryl and Sandra tie again for both SAG and Oscar. They were fantastic together at the Critics Choice Awards. However, if it must be one of the two, I hope Sandra Bullock can pull off the win at the SAGs and Oscars. Meryl is with little argument todays best most consistently terrific actress. Sandra, however, has never received serious awards consideration and she was terrific in "The Blindside." Both actresses have had stellar years. I'm sure Meryl will add more Oscars and inumerable other awards in her future. She is highly deserving, but lets give it to Sandra this year, as we have to Julia Roberts in the past. Huge box office and critical acclaim can make a fine marriage.
