Emmy predix: Best lead comedy actor

April 16, 2010 |  9:29 am

Now that Ed O'Neill ("Modern Family") has declared his Emmy candidacy in the supporting race, that appears to clear up any confusion surrounding the lead race too. Our Emmy seers Chris "Boomer" Beachum and Robert "Rob L" Licuria (AwardsHeaven.net) agree on five likely nominees for best lead comedy actor. For the sixth slot, Boomer picks Larry David ("Curb Your Enthusiasm"), and Rob opts for Thomas Jane ("Hung"). They agree on who's ahead to win — Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock"), who's nabbed this trophy for the last two years.

Also check out their predix in these races: lead drama actor, best drama actress, best supporting drama actorbest drama series, and best comedy series.

Glee Matthew Morrison Alec Baldwin 30 Rock TV news

BEST COMEDY ACTOR: ROB'S PREDIX
1. Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock")
2. Steve Carell ("The Office")
3. Jim Parsons ("The Big Bang Theory")
4. Tony Shalhoub ("Monk")
5. Thomas Jane ("Hung")
6. Matthew Morrison ("Glee")

Alternates: Charlie Sheen ("Two and a Half Men"), Larry David ("Curb Your Enthusiasm")

ROB'S COMMENTARY: This is a solid group, with Thomas Jane a possible threat and Matthew Morrison my left-field choice (and deservedly so). Could voters get lazy and reanoint Sheen or David? Probably.

BEST COMEDY ACTOR: BOOMER'S PREDIX
1. Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock")
2. Steve Carell ("The Office")
3. Tony Shalhoub ("Monk")
4. Jim Parsons ("The Big Bang Theory")
5. Larry David ("Curb Your Enthusiasm")
6. Matthew Morrison ("Glee")

Alternates -- Charlie Sheen ("Two and a Half Men"), Thomas Jane ("Hung")

BOOMER'S COMMENTARY:  This would seem to be one of the easiest categories to predict, with the first five men on my list almost assured of nominations.

My upset special might be that Jim Parsons will win this year (assuming he submits the hilarious episode "The Pants Alternative"). The global phenomenon of "Glee" probably pushes Matthew Morrison over the top for the final slot.

Charlie Sheen has been nominated for several years, but recent troubles and the possible abandonment of his show/cast/crew most likely dooms him for another nomination.

Thomas Jane received a recent Golden Globe nomination, but this sort of show might have trouble getting Emmy support.

Why can't James roday finally get a much deserved nomination for his hilarious performance in psych?

UGH< WHEN IS JAMES RODAY FROM PSYCH GOING TO GET NOMINATED. I ASSURE YOU THAT IF HE IS NOMINATED HE WILL WIN -- he delivers it every week.

WELL I PERSON'LY DON'T SPELL THE GREATEST BUT I AM ROOTING FOR ALEC ALL THE WAY IN THAT RACE HE DOES SO MUCH MORE BEHIND THE SCENES STUFF WITH HIS FRIENDS IN THE FILM MAKING BUSINESS'.
'MORE THAN IS PUBLICIZED SO HE WON IT TWO YEARS IN A ROW RIGHT ON GO FOR BROKE
SO WHAT OPRAH IS THE BEST DO GOOD'ER THE BIG PRIZE GIVER CONAN TELLS IT LIKE IT IS ME I LIKE TO THINK I'M A LITTLE CONAN I LIKE TO DO MY OWN TALK SHOWS BY MYSELF OR WITH FRIENDS IMPROVISING CONAN'S STATURE AND PRESENCE IF OPRAH EVER MADE ME LAUGH I WOULD BE ALL ABOUT HER BUT TO ME LIFE IS LAUGHTER MAYBE ITS NOT A COMEDY CONTEST OH WELL CONAN IS HANDS DOWN THE BIGGEST AND BEST TALK SHOW HOST THAT EVER LIVED.
I AM OWNER AND COMMANDER OF MY OPINION'S AS CONVOLUTED AS THEY MIGHT BEE.
AS FOR TAYLOR SWIFT IF SHE IS CRYING AND WINING THAT SHE WAS SHORT ON THE AWARDS IT JUST GOES TO SHOW THAT SHE IS TO HIGH ON HER SELF FOR HER OWN GOOD AND WINNING HAPPENS AND WINING ABOUT LOOSING WELL THATS JUST TO BAD IF IT DOES EVER OCCUR TO HER THAT AWARDS ARE NICE BUT SALES AND ROYALTY'S ARE JUST AS GOOD AND SHE IS NOT SHORT ON SALES EVERY PICK-UP WITH A COWBOY OR EVERY 80'S CAMERO OR TRANS -AM THAT BLASTS PAST HAS TAILOR SWIFT RESONATING LIKE A BANSHEE DO NOT FORGET EVERY POST TWEEN GIRL AND THE MP-THREES DADDY BOUGHT WITH HIS PAY CHECK.
AND GLEE OH BOY YIP-EE DOO DA DAY NOT EPIC ENOUGH TO STAND OUT IN MY HEAD BUT WHAT DO I KNOW MY HEADS SO FAR UP CONAN'S
A-S THAT I COMPLETELY MISSED THE BUZZ CREATED BY YIPPEEE GLEE.

I agree with Joe. Sheen is an underrated comedy actor on a critically underrated laugh-out-loud comedy program.

His nominations are well-deserved and a win is overdue. He has several worthy episodes this season to submit -- particularly the breakup episode.

However, if a CBS star is going to win this year, I expect Jim Parsons to win over favorite Alec Baldwin -- even though he's 3 for 4 at the Globes and undefeated at SAG for "30 Rock".

Then again, Kelsey Grammer won a fourth trophy for the last season of "Frasier" -- six years after his third win -- so Shalboub could be similarly annointed for the final season of "Monk" (four years after his own third win).

I hope Charlie Sheen isn't nominated. He's got enough recognition for his one note role and performance. And i don't see how Matthew Morrison deserves a nomination since he's been quite bland in his role. And while Alec Baldwin has been great in his role i don't think he had much to do this season on 30 rock. Give someone else a chance. I feel the same with Steve Carell. I would like to see Nick Offerman from Parks and Recreation in their place.

Big Bang Theory has become the 2nd most popular half-hour comedy show, and sometimes makes top spot against Men re-runs. Expect people tired of the usual suspects to make it number 1.

I don't see how Charlie Sheen can not win. Sure he's got quirks. But when it comes to delivering the goods with a funny show, industry-envy and stand alone quality, Sheen & Co. deserve a Emmy.
