Webby Awards pit Jim Carrey against U2

April 15, 2010 | 11:20 am

When the Webby Award nominations were unveiled this week, they included new "People's Voice" awards to be decided by regular Internet posters. That empowers you, for example, to help pick the best celebrity or fan site: Jim Carrey's domain or U2's? Other races are decided by judges who include Martha Stewart and David Bowie. Winners will be announced on June 14.

There are lots of curious matchups across all races. Nominees for best social networking include Digg and Twitter, but not Facebook. In the movie category, the site of a single film, "District 9," battles against one for an entire TV film channel (IFC). In the events category, the Tribeca Film Festival comes out swinging against the World Series.

The clash over best viral video spans lots of fun entries, pitting "David After Dentist" against "Lindsay Lohan's eHarmony Profile" and — my favorite — "Auto-Tune the News" (video below).
