Can 'Time Stands Still' defy the odds at the Tonys?

May 7, 2010 |  5:38 pm

Looks like Martin Denton (NYTheatre.com) expects a few sweeps at the Tony Awards. He foresees "Memphis" nabbing best musical, lead actress (Montego Gover), score, book and orchestrations. Among revivals, he says "La Cage aux Folles" and "Fences" will romp, including in some key acting categories — except one notable slot. Denton thinks "Fences" star Denzel Washington will lose best lead actor to "Red" star Alfred Molina. That's a gutsy call.

His bravest prediction of all: "Time Stands Still" will race across the Tonys finish line as best play even though it's not currently running on Broadway. Normally, closed shows have a tough time winning top categories. However, in this case, "Time Stands Still's" producers just announced that the play will return to Manhattan's boards this fall. That probably boosts its chances, and could prove Denton to be right in the end.
